What Best Explains Mitt Romney?

Filed in National by on July 1, 2011

You would think if you had a reputation for flip-flopping and having no core ideology that you would be careful not to reinforce that impression. Well, not if you’re Multiple Choice Mitt Romney. Yesterday Mitt Romney flip-flopped on one of his core messages: that Obama made the recession worse. Then he denied he even said it.

Until yesterday, the claim that Obama made the recession “worse” was central to Romney’s campaign message. He repeated it a number of times even after it was repeatedly debunked by independent fact checkers. Reporters had refrained from pressing him to justify the claim — until yesterday, when NBC asked him about it. That’s when he backtracked.

“Mitt Romney was caught red handed by one independent fact checker after another not telling the truth about the state of the economy,” DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse says. “Rather than admitting he was wrong and apologizing he’s now trying to deny he ever said it.”

Of course, the DNC already has an ad out with the unforced error.

Really, I have no idea why Romney stepped all over his own campaign message, but also of all the other Republicans. Not that I wouldn’t be happy if Romney wanted to do a reality-based campaign, but still. What do you think explains Mitt’s unforced error:

    • He was dropped on his head as a child.
    • He really has multiple personality disorder.
    • He’s been drinking.
    • He forgot that “he made it worse” was his campaign’s strategy and thought he was attacking another Republican.
    • He really has no idea what he’s doing.
  • I’m sure you creative people have a better explanation for what’s happening in Mitt’s head, because I’m certainly scratching mine.

    1. I don’t know what’s going on in his head, but here’s what goes on in mine when I think of Mitt Romney:

The bleeping guy strapped the family dog, (well, he was in a cage), to the roof of his car to take a long vacation trip. The dog literally was scared shitless and pooped all over everything he could poop on.

Don’t believe me? Check this out:

I just can’t wrap my head around that. No normal well-adjusted person would do such a thing.

Even if I had a predisposition to consider him for president, that one act alone would remove him from my serious consideration.

I suspect that a lot of dog lovers feel the same way.

Another choice for the unforced error:

Romney’s dog is driving the campaign bus and Multiple Choice Mitt is riding in the roof-top crate.

    3. Dana Garrett says:

I think he is nearly totally oppotunistic. For him political positions and facts are fashioned (at times even moment by moment) according to what he thinks is politically advantageous at the time. He nearly always has his finger up gauging the direction of the wind. If it weren’t for the fact that he has stuck to his Mormon beliefs, I’d think he was totally opportunistic.

    4. I agree that Romney is opportunistic. I don’t understand how this would benefit him though, it just looks to hurt him.

    5. Whenever I hear Romney, I’m reminded of the Mormon tactic of ‘Lying for the Lord’:

      http://www.mormonwiki.org/Lying_for_the_Lord

      Here’s an excerpt:

“Lying for the Lord refers to the practice of lying to protect the image of and belief in the Mormon religion, a practice which Mormonism itself fosters in various ways. From Joseph Smith’s denial of having more than one wife, to polygamous Mormon missionaries telling European investigators that reports about polygamy in Utah were lies put out by “anti-Mormons” and disgruntled ex-members, to Gordon B. Hinckley’s dishonest equivocation on national television over Mormon doctrine, Mormonism’s history seems replete with examples of lying. Common members see such examples as situations where lying is justified. For the Mormon, loyalty and the welfare of the church are more important than the principle of honesty, and plausible denials and deception by omission are warranted by an opportunity to have the Mormon organization seen in the best possible light. This is part of the larger package of things that lead many to describe Mormonism as a cult. “Lying for the lord” is part of Mormonism’s larger deceptive mainstreaming tactics, and conversion numbers would drastically lower if important Mormon beliefs were fully disclosed to investigators.”

To which I ask, how can anyone ever know if Romney is telling the truth? Including Romney.

    6. Frank says:

I doubt it has anything to LDS.

Members of the current Republican Party seem to be willing to say whatever they think will sound good right now at this minute, regardless of what they said yesterday or will say tomorrow.

Just like anyone else playing a con game.

I have to rule out that he has been drinking, because of his faith he has only tried alcohol once in his life, does not drink, has never taken drugs.

I was not around him as a child, so I cannot say for sure whether he was dropped on his head or not, but if he was, this is what it caused him to do.

When Mitt Romney get’s elected the country is going to be prosperous again for me, and for you guys. You just can’t see it because you don’t want to believe it. You are focusing on Negative, and instead of researching all the thousands of positives.
I am a glass is 1/2 full kind of guy. You guys seem to be the glass is 1/2 empty kind of guys. If you can change that one part of your mental outlook on life, you will be much happier.

      Here’s a positive!

Romney says he raised $10M in one day, then says he didn’t.

      Oh wait.

(As an aside — did anyone hear this walkback of the $10M in one day in the media, who breathlessly gave him the publicity he was looking for on this without checking? Anyone?)

Yeeaaahhhh… rattling off a list of names of companies that your investment firm invests in isn’t a resume, Rusty. That’s what an investment firm is supposed to do, dope.

And he graduated college in 1071? Impressive!

Let’s add to this, shall we?

      – Ran for U.S. Senate in 1994; lost to Teddy Kennnedy.

      – Served a single term as Governor of Massachusetts; called it quits and chose not to run again so he could concentrate full-time on running for President.

    12. Rusty Dils says:

Anon, We finally agree on something, your last comment, “Served a single term as Governor of Massachusetts;called it quits and chose not to run again so he could concentrate full-time on running for President.

That is exactly correct. And the country is so very grateful. He is the only Man that can turn this thing around.

    13. Rusty Dils says:

For those of you who are hung up on Romney’s comments about “he did not say the president made it worse”, The question he was answering, is that the reporter made multiple statements in her lead up to her question, including stating the stock market has improved, Mitt Romney was simply answering that part of her question, If you listen to the video, you can hear her state that the stock market has improved. I am sure it is tough for any candidate to answer every question the reporters throw at them without sometimes being misunderstood. He was simply responding to the first part of her question about the stock market. If you will watch Mitt Romney answer questions, often he will say something to the effect, well, you asked several questions, lets tackle this particular one first. In this particular instance he did not do that, and his remarks were mis taken as referring to the economy in general, when in fact he was responding to her question about the stock market. Google the video, you can faintly hear her discuss the stock market. The proof that this is true, is that in the coming days, weeks, and months, he will continue to point out the facts, that the President has made the Economy Much Worse. He also told the lady that if she belived the economy was not bad, go ahead, be his guest, (I think meaning she is entitled to her own opinion). I personally think the economy sucks

    14. Geezer says:

“He is the only Man that can turn this thing around.”

Great logic. A guy who got rich chopping tens of thousands of jobs is obviously the best guy to bring us more jobs. Any more brilliant ideas, Rusty? Maybe hire an arsonist to run the fire department? A thief to run the police department? A convicted Medicare fraudster as governor of Florida? Oh, wait…

    15. puck says:

On the other hand, Mitt did turn around the Olympics by hitting up his rich friends for cash. That is just what the country needs right now. But somehow I don’t think that’s what Mitt has in mind this time.

    16. Rusty Dils says:

I really do appreciate your guys comments. Obviously we disagree, but maybe if we keep working at it we can solve some problems, thats what it is all about is it not. Thanks, Rusty
