Friday Open Thread

Filed in National by on July 15, 2011

Welcome to your Friday open thread. Friday is just another day, so I’m told. Nothing to get excited about. Move along, nothing to see here.

Kids, don’t do this at home.

The disposal of drums of sodium into Lake Lenore, an alkaline lake in the Grand Coulee area of eastern Washington State, in 1947 by the War Assets Administration. From a January 13, 1947 newsreel available at the Internet Archive.

Now your curiosity has been satisfied. It was pretty cool, huh?

An Austrian man spent 3 years fighting his government for the right to wear a pasta strainer on his head in his drivers license photo. He won.

In Austria one of the strangest fights for religious freedom has come to an end: Niko Alm, a self-described “Pastafarian,” fought for three years for the right to wear a pasta strainer on his head in his driver’s license photo.

His argument? Alm claimed he belonged to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and wearing the strainer was part of his religion.

Here’s the picture. Are you inspired?

We seem to have some problem with the blog. Sometime last evening we seem to have lost everything posted (and scheduled to post) sometime after 10:15 AM. So lots of comments and threads are gone.

We’re not sure why, but the tech gods are looking into it and we hope to restore it all. Until then, just hang in there. Sorry about this.
