The Real Victim Is Rupert Murdoch

Filed in National by on July 18, 2011

The Wall Street Journal finally notices that there’s a huge international scandal that affects their newspaper and parent company. And wouldn’t you know, the real victim is Rupert Murdoch and the 1st Amendment.

We also trust that readers can see through the commercial and ideological motives of our competitor-critics. The Schadenfreude is so thick you can’t cut it with a chainsaw. Especially redolent are lectures about journalistic standards from publications that give Julian Assange and WikiLeaks their moral imprimatur. They want their readers to believe, based on no evidence, that the tabloid excesses of one publication somehow tarnish thousands of other News Corp. journalists across the world.

The prize for righteous hindsight goes to the online publication ProPublica for recording the well-fed regrets of the Bancroft family that sold Dow Jones to News Corp. at a 67% market premium in 2007. The Bancrofts were admirable owners in many ways, but at the end of their ownership their appetite for dividends meant that little cash remained to invest in journalism. We shudder to think what the Journal would look like today without the sale to News Corp.

In braying for politicians to take down Mr. Murdoch and News Corp., our media colleagues might also stop to ask about possible precedents. The political mob has been quick to call for a criminal probe into whether News Corp. executives violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act with payments to British security or government officials in return for information used in news stories. Attorney General Eric Holder quickly obliged last week, without so much as a fare-thee-well to the First Amendment.

People are sooooo mean! Why would they criticize that saint Rupert Murdoch? He’s just a common man, trying to make a living.

I honestly can’t figure out what is going on here. Normally I would have expected a few fall guys to be named and the whole thing proclaimed to be an isolated incident, a few bad apples, etc. and then back to business as usual.

But the UK and US governments now seem to be hellbent on unraveling the media arm of the VRWC, which is the last thing I would ever have expected to happen.

The authorities are actually doing their jobs, pulling at threads until the whole damn sweater is unraveling before our eyes. I can only stand and stare and watch the rain of shoes falling out of the closet.

im sure we will come to find out it is all Obama’s fault…. as usual.

  3. Jason330 says:

In the spirit of moderation, Obama will only accept two thirds of the blame.

Puck, Don’t get excited. No rich person will go to jail for anything in the United States.

True. The punishment is in the stock price.

The fox tards will believe anything to rationalize this away. I haven’t watched any of the bullshit excuse-making on fox, but if it does come out that Murdoch and co did hack 9/11 families, along with whatever else the investigation digs up, then I’d expect a full-on european soshulust government taking out freedoms narrative to commence at a warp 5 level. The rubes will believe anything, and will conveniently forget everything that points to culpability.

Actually, this kind of excuse-making falls right into FoxNews’ wheelhouse. Now, as with everything that fox news craps onto the American public, it’s up to the MSM to call them out on it.

i dunno VC, CNN and NBC are such (insert sexually offensive word for wimpy here) that they might carry out their own hacking scandal to remain “balanced”

i dunno VC, CNN and NBC are such cowards that they might carry out their own hacking scandal to remain “balanced”

See how easy that was, Ben. 🙂

  9. socialistic ben says:

oh i know. ive decided to make my blog-persona a “poke the bear” type. but to my main point, MSM sucks.

  10. pandora says:

Just so long as it’s just your blog persona! 😉

  11. Von Cracker says:

Yup, Ben. Usually when there is something that threatens a major news outlet, they all tend to circle the wagons to protect the “institution”, regardless if it’s legit or not.

Only the Feds can bring it down, but that will fall into the government takeover of the media meme fox, and subsequently others, are waiting to push in the first place! Crying Victimization is not solely for wealthy white Americans, but for GloboComms run by wealthy white Americans too!
