The Iraq War is finally over.

Filed in National by on October 21, 2011

Sources tell ABC News that President Obama will announce today that U.S. troops in Iraq will draw down to zero by the end of the year.

A White House official says that at approximately 11:30am today, President Obama convened a secure video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to talk with him about this news.

Thank fucking God. Now end Afghanistan.

This is really good. And on schedule!

Especially after senior DOD and State Dept types spent the better part of this year trying to convince al-Maliki that he *really* didn’t want our troops to leave.

  2. MJ says:

This is what Mission Accomplished REALLY means. No aircraft carrier, no landing in a jump suit, just keeping a campaign promise.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

Mitt Romney’s statement indicates he wants to stay in Iraq forever.

  4. Socialistic ben says:

Im very happy that the troops are comming home, but is anyone going to point out that we are leaving because they TOLD us to, NOT because Obama decided it was time? honesty people, it’s the only way we’ll stay better than the repuk slime.

  5. puck says:

“we are leaving because they TOLD us to”

That’s how we knew they were ready.

  6. cassandra m says:

We are leaving because there is a Status of Forces Agreement where we agreed to be gone by 31 December this year. There were other milestones in this thing that we met too. The only thing in question was whether the Iraqis (or Americans for that matter) would buy the hair on fire arguments from the DOD and State that we should stay.

I know its fashionable among the kids to ignore the fact that we’ve been abiding by this SOFA (in the main) since it got approved, but honesty people — it’s the only way we’ll stay better than the emo progs. OK?

  7. Socialistic ben says:

who agreed to the STFO again? Tough pill eh? sure as i dont like the Chase Utley prediction, i hate crediting W with anything.
Look, points to Obama for the correct useage of force in ending the Quadaphieigh regime, points for not fucking up Iraq, and good for him for respecting a sovereign nation’s wishes in a way that no republican would even consider. (is that enough obama praise?)
BUT the DOD wanted to keep troops there, tried to make it so, was rejected and now FINALLY all our countrymen will come home (from there)

  8. Socialistic ben says:

and are we to believe that Obama has no control over the DOD or State? that they act against his wishes? he at least has to approve what they do… so IPSO FACTO he supported staying there until he was told he couldn’t.

  9. occam says:

Honestly, I just don’t believe it. I think enough Americans will be left behind that the war will look the same 6 months from now as it did 6 months ago. Mind you, it looks a lot better than it did 6 years ago but I think the war will continue.

  10. Dana Garrett says:

If the USA is leaving Iraq against the USA’s wishes simply because a sovereign nation told it to, then that is a welcome sea change in the drift of USA foreign policy and Obama should get high marks for it.

  11. Socialistic ben says:

you’re right. i just want to make sure no one is walking around saying “praise obama!! he brought the troops home all on his own”

Where in the world are you coming from with this statement? Who here is saying this? Please point me to such a comment.

  13. PBaumbach says:

If I can express my disappointment in Obama not succeeding at closing Guantanamo, then I can praise him for ending the US occupation of Iraq by year-end.

No one has said ‘all alone.’ But the buck stops at his door, for both good and ill.

    This is good.

  14. Socialistic ben says:

no one here, pandora. its all over TDB and Huffpost…… i wanted to, if necessary be a jerk, and make sure people kept their heads here.

Obama’s foreign policy is “if you’re doing it right, it wont look like you’re doing much at all” I like that. Part of that has to be that he doesn’t get credit for individual successes, but rather the whole package.

  15. puck says:

It is worth celebrating every time Obama keeps a campaign promise. And don’t forget, Obama beat the guy who wanted to keep troops in Iraq for 100 years.

  16. anonone says:

Praise obama!! He brought the troops home all on his own.
