Veteran’s Day Open Thread [11.11.11]

Filed in National by on November 11, 2011

At 11:11 am today I was trying to find the number of Delawareans that were killed in WWI. I couldn’t find a number, but I did find out that a staggering number of people were killed in that war. (22 million casualties e.g. killed or wounded) Great Brittan alone lost 2.5 million out of 5 million in arms.

At least the deaths were not in vain and the horror of “The Great War” made it impossible for any other country to ever contemplate the idea of going to war.

its an open thread – but I thoght I’d let you all know that the “patriots” are infiltrating Occupy sites – but not if tuberculosis is there:

maybe she should understand english grammar, before doing anything else

“I am glad my son hasn’t went down there to infiltrate the group..”

    scary times indeed Mellie

please tell me you guys have seen the teaser footage of Gabby Giffords’ interview Monday night. She is amazing.

Link is to story about Giffords meet and greets, but video of the promo up top. Also includes footage from her recovery.

That Yelp thing is the best. Thanks, Cassandra.

The clip of Perry’s senior moment was on a pace to be played more than the Dean Scream… but it seems to have slowed up a bit, so maybe not. Herman Cain and Rick Perry owe Penn State a favor (ick…) for taking the media focus off them both.

This is what a serious protest is. you get sick, you get hungry, you get cold, you get beaten by cops. You don’t show up for 3 hours on your Fox NEws bus, get a pre-paid box lunch and get home in time to see yourself on Glenn Beck. The Tea Party is dead, the republican establishment will rid themselves of that group of idiots while people who REALLY care about america suffer for equal treatment for all.

Occupy Delaware has posted a list of Urgent Needs on their Facebook page:

    Emergency Blankets
    Cold Weather Sleeping bags
    Tarps
    Totes (water-proof containers)

    First Aid kits
    Flu Masks
    Hand Sanitizer

It wouldn’t be too hard to pick up some stuff for these guys and drop it off for them.

DelawarePolitics celebrates Veterans Day with a truly offensive video exploiting women.

The women are supposed to be desirable, but they all look like strippers or Spitzer’s hooker. The girls are shown rejecting some civilian guys in favor of their uniform fetish when the troops show up. Later in the video their soldier-boys are shown mocking the civilians they are supposed to be defending, by showing them struggle with push-ups. The “troops” in this video don’t have the decency of character we would like to associate with our our real troops.

    Something to offend everybody here.

  8. anon says:

How many of them served? I think we all know the answer to that.

  9. liberalgeek says:

Well, we know that David Anderson served. I can’t speak for the rest of them. For our blog, MJ served. Over at Outside the Machine, Donviti believed that he was the only Delaware blogger that had served, until Steve Newton mentioned that he served for several times longer than Donviti.

I thank them all for their service, silliness notwithstanding.

  10. donviti says:

I meant to say the only hottest veteran delaware blogger. It’s not something I want to boast about though. So I left out the hottest part so as not to intimidate you non serving war supporting liberals.

Either way what I wrote was/is a god damned great post celebrating people like myself that defended the country so people like you and jason can hand out blankets to real protesters and drive home and sleep safe in your own beds.

    You’re welcome (silliness standing)

  11. Occupy DE says:

Your welcome. And I intend to hug all Vets at the Occupation tonight. Since most of them are younger than I and cute, it will be great fun. And then I am going to wrap up in my silver emergency blanket and pretend I am a baked potato.

  12. Aoine says:

@puck – I agree about the post at DP as being truly offensive

there are a lot of videos on youtube that would have served the purpose in an appropiate and respectful way, as befiting the way to honor our veterans, past and present

I can tell you that my spouse and my son-im-law both were also offended.
the one chosen was about as tasteless and cheesey as one can get – reflecting the taste and the mentality of DP.

I think, once again, it gives us a view into the mindset and more importantly yet again – shows again where David Anderson puts women in his world view.

  13. puck says:

I was actually more offended by the disrespect for civilians, and the elevation of the military to fetish level. I have no objection to scantily clad consenting adult women.

The video straddles the line between spoof and toxic. If I look at it as a spoof, with the joke on the military fetishists, it seems OK. But that’s not why it was posted.

  14. MJ says:

What was funny about that video over at DP was the pop-up add for Barbara Boxer’s PAC to elect more Democratic women to Congress.

And yes, I served – US Army. And I’m a member of the American Legion.

  15. Aoine says:

not sure I would call it the ELEVATION of the military to fetish level…..

not the word I would use

  16. Crunchy says:

Crunchy also served, from 1987 to 1993, in a non-combat job.

  17. Aoine says:

@MJ and Crunchy and yes (as much as it pains me, but I’m playing fair) David Anderson

    thanks for your service! 🙂
