You can be a man.

This following conversation on Talking Points Memo really struck a chord with me. First, there was this post from a reader that was reposted by Josh Marshall. That brought a response from another reader that I agree with.

Tuesday Open Thread [6.5.12]

It is time for another Obama evolution. Jill Harris, managing director of strategic initiatives for Drug Policy Action, the political arm of the Drug Policy Alliance, has a WaPo update on the public’s views on marijuana laws reform, noting: “A new Rasmussen poll showed that 56 percent of Americans support the legalization of marijuana and only 36 percent oppose it. A Mason-Dixon poll conducted in May found that 74 percent of Democrats, 79 percent of Independents and 67 percent of Republicans believe that the federal government should respect state medical marijuana laws and not prosecute individuals who are in compliance with these laws.

The Polling Report [6.5.12]

Filed in National by on June 5, 2012 4 Comments

Today is the day in Wisconsin. The race is tight, so turnout will matter. Here is hoping the Democrats’ ground game is pulls them over the top. Depending on the poll, you have either a tied race, a small and surmountable Walker lead, or a large and insurmountable Walker lead.

General Assembly Pre-Game Show: Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Filed in National by on June 5, 2012 3 Comments

No doubt the big action of the day will take place in party caucuses, where members of the Joint Finance Committee will brief members on the markup of the budget.

It’s always possible (wishful thinking, I know) that, after two weeks of soul-searching away from Dover, some legislators may announce that they’ve decided to retire. Of course, careful readers have already detected the Jeff Goldblum-sized Fly in the ointment, the very notion of soul-searching by politicos.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) tells the San Francisco Chronicle she is “upbeat about the prospects for a female president in her lifetime, namely her friend Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

“Why wouldn’t she run? She’s a magnificent secretary of state. She’s our shot.”

DL Tracking Poll: Denn Leads by Landslide Margins

Filed in Delaware by on June 4, 2012 6 Comments

The spammers were not out in force during this poll of the Lt. Governor’s race, so I guess we have a more accurate reflection of our readers’ views on the race. Now, normal caveats apply: this is a non-random unscientific internet poll. But, DL readers favor incumbent Lt. Governor Matt Denn (D) over Republican Sher Valenzuela by a 53 point margin, 72% to 19%.

Extortion? Puh-leeze.

Filed in National by on June 4, 2012 68 Comments

First it was plagiarism, now it’s extortion. Mike Katz may be a doctor but, judging by the way he throws overheated charges around, he’s sure no lawyer. And he looks less and less like a progressive all the time. Which, perhaps, is what he wants in his R district, but it’s not something I, for one, need. Nor do progressives.

In fact, he is using his claim of ‘political extortion’ to justify his burial of National Popular Vote legislation in his Senate Elections Committee. Might I point out that Katz sought the office of President Pro Tempore on a promise of not ‘desk-drawering’ legislation, which is exactly what he’s done? HB 55(D. E. Williams) passed the House on June 7, 2011. President Pro-Tem Tony DeLuca assigned the bill to the Senate Administrative Services/Elections Committee, which certainly appears to be the correct committee, on June 8, 2011. It has sat there for almost a year now, even though three committee members, Senators Blevins, Marshall, and Sokola, support its release from committee. Katz has joined two Rethugs, Senators Booth and Lawson, in keeping HB 55 bottled up in committee.

The Polling Report [6.4.12]

Filed in National by on June 4, 2012 2 Comments

The new CNN poll late last week had some good news for the President despite a bad week economically. The poll echoed others on the econony: that if Americans are seeing economic troubles in their own lives and communities, they’re not taking it out on President Obama, as his approval rating is up to 52% and he leads Mitt Romney among voters by three points, 49% to 46%.

There is also an enthusiasm gap, with Obama voters more strongly behind him than Romney’s supporters. And on the most important question of this election: Who do you think better understands the problems faced by ordinary Americans — Barack Obama or Mitt Romney?” Obama leads by 19, 55% to 34%.

Over the weekend, have two new polls in California, which only confirm that RustyDils is a blithering idiot, as Obama leads by double digits in both of them. And we have a new poll out of New Mexico, but confirms the state’s strong Obama status.

John Sides shows empirically that if there is any media bias in the presidential race, it has benefitted Mitt Romney–not every day, but overall, and it’s not close.
