QOTD — Should Republicans Speak at the DNC Convention?

Filed in National by on August 10, 2012

TPM (via the dreaded POLITICO) reports that the DNC is thinking of including 2 or 3 moderate Republican leaders to the speaking lineup for the convention. What do you think about this idea?

Certainly the Democrats have folks like Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman who have spoken at RNC conventions. If the included Republicans are there to highlight just how radically right the rest of the GOP is — and I mean really punctuate this difference — this could be worthwhile. Especially since we learn that Independents are cooling to Multiple Choice Mitt. I don’t trust the DNC to do this well, though, but what do I know?

Tell us what you think in the comments.

Im inclined to agree. I think it could be very good if done well. If, for example Huntsman was there… but i dont trust the DNC to do it well, best to focus on their strengths, getting out of the way and letting Obama and Clinton talk the whole time.

  2. Delaware Dem says:

It depends on who it is. Colin Powell, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood? John Danforth?

This has been done before, I think, in 1996 during Bill Clinton’s reelection convention. And yes, Zell Miller spoke at the 2004 RNC and Joe Lieberman at the 2008 RNC.

  3. jason330 says:

Put Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell on the speakers list. Let them try to promote their failed economic bullshit policies while being pelted with garbage.

  4. Dave says:

Huntsman would be near the top of my list as well. So would Powell. Not too many others though. It’s a short list.

I know a guy, and he is in close with another guy with the DNC, and they say they heard some other people talking, and that it is going to be Sarah Palin speaking at the DNC convention

“2 or 3 moderate Republican leaders”

May as well ask for 2 or 3 Higgs bosons.

  7. j marie says:

What about Alan Simpson- fiscal conservative but completely called out the extremists in his party. Look for his interview last year w/ Chris Matthews or NPR. Good stuff.

  8. JJ says:

I would pay big $$ to see an O”Donnell, Bachman and Palin three way coffee clatch analysis after each night of Democrat convention…that would be a hoot of a freak show! Someone call FOX to get that done…

  9. Steve Newton says:

@j marie–Alan Simpson is still alive? Really?

  10. Rustydils says:

I also heard their having the three stooges speak,
    Barry, Willy, and Joe

  11. kavips says:

Alan Simpson is still very much alive. Does Simpson-Bowles ring any bells?

  12. Steve Newton says:

@kavips Yeah but I thought that was some sort of memorial. Every picture I’ve ever seen, the man looks embalmed, so I just thought . . . .

  13. kavips says:

He is doing rather well, and is still alert… Come to think of it, he looked embalmed back in the 80’s standing beside Reagan at signings… Like they waxed his head or something.

As a conservative Republican, it would be good to remember he was pro choice, and pro gay rights. He said anyone who purportedly values the rights of humans to choose their fates, cannot be on the other side of this issue.

They don’t make them like that anymore.

And he always cracked me up with his homespun humor….

  14. heragain says:

No. We have to be a political party, not a photo op looking for a spot marked X. If they want to speak at a hall we rent, let them change their registration. Some of them should, anyway. Not ONE nickel to those people.

My only exception would be Megan McCain, because she’s not elected, and I think she’s a hoot.

  15. Liberal Elite says:

If they want ratings, they should invite Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, and have them debate Elizabeth Warren, Tim Caine, and Jon Tester.

  16. traveler says:

You’re right, the DNC is like a Three Stooges Convention. All of the clowns in one place for a short time.

Are you talking about real Republicans or RINO’s being lined up to speak at Cirque du Soleil?
