Rethugs Want Melloy Off Ballot

Filed in Delaware by on August 23, 2012

Apparently, [Republican Mayoral candidate] Kevin Melloy’s check for the filing fee bounced, and Rethugs would rather have nobody carrying the R banner in the City than, you know, pay the fee themselves:

John Fluharty, executive director of the state party, made the request in a letter today. Melloy’s check for the $4,520 filing was returned with insufficient funds, according to another letter Fluharty sent to Melloy earlier this month.

Wow. And Kevin is kicking off his Mayoral campaign this evening, I believe.

  2. Marcy says:

He should be off the ballot based on that stupid hat he insists on wearing ALL THE TIME. I sat through many mayoral forums and found it completely disrespectful that he never took it off.

Yeah, I know that’s not on topic but I just had to get it out. It’s been annoying me for awhile.

I like Kevin & he brings a lot of creativity to the election. If the check bouncing is for real, Sorry Kevin..bad move …if not keep on! Some of your ideas seem way out there, so do a lot of others, including me. Keep on bringing them!

  4. Marcy: Bald guys do that. Accounts for 80% of all baseball cap sales (I made that up).

Now, if he’s not bald, you’ve got a point.

Here’s the serious point: The fee is what, $4300? Less than Charlie ‘Bouvier de Flandres’ Copeland pays to get his toenails clipped in any given quarter. Parties return fees all the time to preferred candidates. Meaning, the R’s would rather have nobody run for mayor than to have Melloy run for mayor. I’d like to know why.

  5. I find baldness comments offensive. Please try to be more sensitive to the follicly challenged. /sarcasm

  6. Sorry, Roland. The follicly-challenged live a life of which I cannot conceive. I mean, how would you like to be THIS guy?:

Per Kevin Melloy: I thought General Assembly passed a law years ago that required “good funds” at time of filing to make the filing legitimate. So if check bounced, I would think he would be off and Elaine Manlove would not have discretion in the matter.
Check DE Code on that language …..
Otherwise, the filing fee was not properly paid at date of filing deadline..

  8. Sorry, El Som,
The video wouldn’t load for me. I’m balding. A yarmulke would cover my bald spot. My kids find it hilarious. I wear a ball cap in the winter because my head gets cold.

  9. JJ says:

Wiil is right. I too take my hat off to Kevin for running. [Sorry, couldn’t resist.] He has compassion for the poor and has some ideas to offer.
I don’t think the city GOP is behind him though. Some GOP’ers switched to vote for Montgomery per DiPinto’s impassioned plea, at least until Bill announced the promised 15% property tax hike next year! Yikes! Even Rakestraw has Montgomery signs in her yard, and no Romney or Repub candidates, as the still sitting Nat’l Committewoman???

  10. Too bad, Roland. Root Boy Slim doing “My Wig Fell Off”.

    Sample lyric:

“My wig fell off, hand my toupee to me
    I’m quittin’ the disco, I’m almost 43.”

(Somewhere, Delaware Dem, who has every side the Trammps ever recorded, nods in solidarity.):

Saw Root Boy 3 times. First time was the best entrance ever. They brought him out on a hand truck, and dumped him on stage. I’ll never forget his inspirational words to me and my friends:

“What kind of drugs are you fellas on? Got any?”

There weren’t many Rs who switched over in the city — something like 120. Even so, you’d think that they would be delighted to have someone representing the team in the city. I’d like to know why they won’t support him.

  12. cassandra m says:

There’s more in today’s NJ. Apparently Kevin thought check was a formality.

And the GOP is looking for another candidate. So I’m wondering if the GOP is looking at the mayoral field and thinking that they might have some chance in the city. I think that is unlikely, but it might explain why they are trying to show Kevin the door.

  13. Will Minster says:

I think the GOP has given up on Wilmington which is a shame. Mike Brown had to drop out early because his own party would not support him. That & the constant News Journal labeling him as having no chance because of the majority of voters being Dems. Not one for token candidates, but it at least keeps the issues in front.

  14. Fightingbluehen says:

Kevin’s circle of friends include some of the wealthiest people in the state. I’m sure he can find the funds to cover the fee if he wants to.
I knew Kevin back in college. He doesn’t fit the typical mold of a Republican and this may be a reason that some want him out.

  15. JJ says:

GOP should draft Priscilla for Mayor if Melloy gets dumped. She’s out as Nat’l Committeewoman and has lived in city forever. One problem: She has two Bill Mongtomery signs in her front yard, and not even one Romney or other GOP statewide candidate. Odd…
