Mitt Romney Lies With Appalling Ease

Filed in National by on October 10, 2012

Shake that Etch-A-Sketch.

Remember all of Mitt Romney’s tough talk on abortion during the Republican primary? No?  Then let’s review:

ROMNEY: I appointed probably 50 or 60 judges–at the trial court level, mostly, the great majority. These were former prosecutors; 80% of them former prosecutors. We don’t have a litmus test for appointing judges–asking them if they’re pro-life or not pro-life. These were people going after crimes and the like. I am pro-life. And the Massachusetts Citizens for Life and several other family-oriented groups wrote a letter two weeks ago and said they’d watched my record, that I was an avidly pro-life governor. I am a pro-life governor; I am a pro-life individual. Is there any possibility that I’ve ever made a mistake in that regard, I didn’t see something that I should have seen? Possibly. But you can count on me, as president, to pursue a policy that protects the life of unborn, whether here in this country or overseas. And I’ll reverse the policies of this president.

ROMNEY: People have had a chance to look at my record and look what I’ve said. I believe people understand that I’m firmly pro-life. I will support justices who believe in following the Constitution and not legislating from the bench. And I believe in the sanctity of life from the very beginning until the very end.

Romney:  “I’m in favor of having the Supreme Court overturn Roe v Wade”

Huckabee asked Romney, “Would you have supported the constitutional amendment that would have established the definition of life at conception?” Romney answered, “Absolutely.”

Remember that Mitt Romney.  Well, forget about him.  Yesterday he said this:

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” Romney told the Des Moines Register Tuesday.

Abortion?  Who’s talking about abortion?  Mitt Romney hasn’t even thought of abortion.  It’s not part of his agenda… at least he doesn’t think so – at least not at this second in time.  And yeah, I get the carefully worded comment that allows Mitt to pick a side whenever he feels like it.

There is something seriously wrong with this man.  The only thing anyone knows about Mitt Romney is that he wants to be president.  That’s it.  Everything he’s said 30 seconds ago can, and probably will, change – He’d cover pre-existing medical conditions?  Um… no.  He won’t cut taxes for the rich?  Well, he didn’t exactly say that.  What?  You claim that’s what the American people heard during the debate? Sorry, he said “share” of taxes.  Pay attention.

People who think he’s really a “moderate” and only spoke conservative to win the primary and people who think he’s really a “conservative” and is only acting moderate to win in November are kidding themselves.  The only honest thing I can say about Mitt Romney is that he’s a liar.

    Oh, for crying out loud.

After the remarks were published online Tuesday, Romney’s campaign spokeswoman reiterated that he is opposed to abortion.

“Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life, and he will be a pro-life president,” Andrea Saul said in a statement.

Earlier Tuesday, the conservative site National Review Online published a different statement from Saul: “Governor Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”

Here’s the deal. Mitt has decided to play the “moderate” for the masses while he and his campaign quietly walk back his statements after the cameras stop rolling.

I guess we have to keep on calling Romney out as a liar, but I don’t think it is changing any minds. The American people LOVE to be lied to, at least by Republicans. Reagan gave them the taste for it.

The Romney campaign is some kind of sick experiment.

I guess what I am saying is – Obama has reached the floor (ceiling?) of how much he can gain by attacking Romney. The tone of light mockery Obama was using was extremely effective, but not so much anymore after getting his ass kicked in the debate. So going negative on Romney has gone as far as it can go and has produced a dead heat (albeit one that leans Obama). So any further gains for Obama will have to come from Obama making a positive case for himself.

@Puck: Which puts him in a tight spot. He’s not really promising anything but four more years of government gridlock. That’s not an appealing pitch.

President Clinton provides some clues as to how to proceed.

What is good here is that Clinton reminds people of Rmoney’s extremeism, the flip-floppery, the mistrust and the unlikeablity of the guy. You can’t act like the Debate Mitt is a newly persistent persona, but one of many so keep reminding people why they didn’t trust him in the first place.

Truth: Mitt Romney is lying to everyone with a wink and a nod.

If Mitt Romney would lie with a nod and leaving some money on the dresser, we’d get the relationship he wants with potential voters.
