Wednesday Daily Delawhere [2.27.13]
The old Sussex County Courthouse, on Bedford Street in Georgetown. The courthouse was built in 1792 when Georgetown replaced Lewes as the county seat. The courthouse served until 1837, when the current courthouse was built.
Actually, the Brick Hotel served as the courthouse from 1837 to 1839. Then the current court went into operation, expanded in 1969.
I was told the move from Lewes to Georgetown was based on someone saying, “Do you think having the county seat within range of British ships’ cannon is a good idea or a bad idea?”
Main reason for move was to have courthouse within 16 miles of 99% of sussex county to make it easier on farmers to get to and from . This led to the creation of the now famous “16 mile beer” in Georgetown . (note:Sussex County Democratic headquarters in background .)
You mean Sussex County Democrat headquarters.
