Independence Mall, great childhood memories of going a restaurant there, whose name I can’t remember

I think the restaurant was Winstons, maybe? One of the first places I can remember selling a really big burger. I think they had a Newark location, too. But wow that’s going back like 30 years or more.

Yes, H.A.Winston’s had that huge burger menu. I was partial to the Hawaiian with pineapple and duck sauce. Their Newark location was on Elkton Rd. between the Rodney and Dickenson dorms.

God damn, I can’t believe I remembered that. It used to be my birthday resturant of choice when I was a pre-teen many, many years ago.

  5. Um… I don’t think that’s the Independence Mall – I think it’s Dover.

That said, I, too, remember Winston’s burgers and how dark that place was!

” It used to be my birthday resturant of choice when I was a pre-teen many, many years ago.”- ha, me too. Not a burger eater. I think I liked their beer cheese soup though. I can’t remember what else I used to order.

It was the introduction of the salad bar and gourmet hamburgers. Pick your toppings, how novel.

Salad bar near the entrance had the best potato salad ever. Also beef on roll with horseradish. And I believe a frosted mug for a cold one. Each booth had a leaded glass light.

  9. Loved Winston’s. Over/under on life expectancy reduction?

I’d say two years, in my case.

    Worth it.

It’s the old State House on the Green in Dover. The present day Supreme Court building is to the right.

OK this is bugging me. My husband and I just looked at pictures of the old State House on the Green, Independence Mall, and Old New Castle Courthouse (that was his guess) and we don’t think it’s any of those. Where is this? Del Dem do you know?

  12. This is the Old State House in Dover. It is interesting that Independence Hall in Philly and some buildings in New Castle look very familiar, all built in the same general time period.

  13. If this was Philly, you would seem much larger buildings in the background there.
