They are going to have to call him “Blue Chip”.

They are going to have to call him “Blue Chip”.

Chip Flowers burnishes his populist cred:

Delaware politicians treasure the Sequoia’s allure, too. On Thursday, state Treasurer Chip Flowers is scheduled to hold a $300-a-head fundraiser on that ship in Washington, D.C., which, according to court papers, rents from $10,000 to $12,000 for a four-hour tour.

Dover lobbyist Bobby Byrd, Wilmington developer Rob Buccini and former DuPont general counsel Stacey Mobley are among the hosts.

Best part of the night? When Chip stands, arms out, leaning over the front of the boat, and turns back to the lobbyist holding him. “I’m flying, Jack! I’m flying!!!!”

  2. Nuttingham

Making the Dover lobbyists drive all the way to Washington so they can spend another few hours on a boat telling you just how much they love you before driving all the way home is at least amusing. They would probably have donated more at an event at Fraziers just to avoid the drive.

It’s going to be so great to watch this guy’s career crash and burn.

  4. Jason330

The optics of this strike me as the worst kind of Ivy League BS. I wonder how Celia is going to put the “awe shucks, just that dang old Delaware way again” spin on this?

  5. Awesome that the People’s Treasurer is throwing an event the People can’t afford. Also awesome that the People’s Treasurer rails against the Delaware Way Good Old Boys, but goes to DC with them to collect checks.

  6. Nuttingham

    Hey, whatever floats his… Oh.

  7. Uber-lobbyist Bobby Byrd
    the DuPont Company
    Buccini Pollin.

To some pols, they represent the only people who matter.

    Flowers is one of them.

  8. Nuttingham

Maybe they’re actually setting sale out of the Port of Wilmington?

  9. geezer

Who’s on Byrd’s client list that would make him support Flowers? Or is it just prophylactic support?

  10. Nuttingham

There were bank lobbyists on the invitation that did not make the NJ story.

  11. RunCV79

You guys better stop this… I saw a signal in the sky over Middletown alerting the Chip-munks to get to their keyboards and defend this injustice against the People’s Treasurer!

  12. Jason330

I have to give them credit for not jumping in. Thier smartest move right now is to keep quiet and let this fade off languidly under the horizon like a luxury yachet is want to do.

  13. Nuttingham

    No. Somebody must, though.

  14. Nuttingham

Is it true that the paper is sending somebody down to see who gets on the boat?

This is a crazy thread full of lies. Why is this site obsessed with Chip. Are we going to have a thread discussing what time he goes to the bathroom? The guy spent most of his own money to get elected and he has a fundraiser and you criticize him. This is what I heard, POTUS is dropping by with the mystery banks and Nick Adams is the lifeguard. The Potters will be there to make sure there are no contractor issues. Beyonce will be there to sing the national anthem or at least lip sync it. Robin Thicke is the guest performer and the Cash Management Policy Board will be there to make sure it makes no money and “oversee” the African American man with money. Jack will be there to hand Chip the M&T deposit slip at the end of the night. Beau and Matt will be there to push him off the boat to make sure he doesn’t run for Gov in 2016. DEDO will be there to learn how to make money. Get real and stop lying on a good Democrat who is doing a great job. Sounds he is gaining support locally and nationally.

  16. It can only be improved if he claimed that the Sequoia was providing a round trip cruise to Cuba for the check writers.

  17. Geezer

“Sounds he is gaining support locally and nationally.”

Yeah, from bankers and lobbyists. Hey, they’re people, too, myfriend!

  18. anon

Is this the first time a Delaware politician has held a high-dollar fundraiser outside of Delaware?

  19. puck

Yeah, from bankers and lobbyists. Hey, they’re people, too, myfriend!

And all of them also on Markell’s contributor list. I guess when you are in the political fundraising game, nobody can afford to leave legally available money on the table. And given the amount of help Flowers can expect from Markell, he’s going to need every penny of it.

  20. Nuttingham

See, this is really about poor judgement. Specifically, picking Nick Adams to be the lifeguard just days after calling for him to be transferred off the state account

  21. Is this the first time a Delaware politician has held a high-dollar fundraiser outside of Delaware?

No idea of the dollars involved, but I know that Jack Markell has had out-of-state fundraisers. KWS has claimed to be doing fundraising in NYC to explain some of her expenses.

  22. truthsayer

Live blogging from the USS Sequoia starting at 6pm. Tune in! Too funny. My check is ready, not from a M&T account though!

  23. SussexWatcher

“DEDO will be there to learn how to make money.”

Does the Almighty Chip hold these secrets, as well? Impressive! You think he’d share now for the good of the state.

  24. Nuttingham

The issue isn’t that somebody is having an out of state fundraiser. Delaware is pretty small to raise all your money for a statewide race within its borders. It’s paying an absurd amount of money to showboat on, well, a boat, known as the play thing of Presidents.

  25. geezer

Oh, and you think the regular folk shouldn’t party on the plaything of presidents? Hell, that sounds like a great place to throw a party. Shows you’re a man of refined taste, and wouldn’t be impressed with some penny-ante proposition, if you get my drift.

  26. PluribusUnum

… do you guys know how political fundraising works? At all?

“Is this the first time a Delaware politician has held a high-dollar fundraiser outside of Delaware?”

Uhm, you’ve got to be kidding me. These guys travel A LOT for fundraisers, they have to.

No love for Chip, but this isn’t outside the mainstream. More than anything it’s political malpractice to pay so much overhead for a boat when you could have the same event at a dive bar in DC…. but Chip’s all about the show.

  27. jason330

No doubt, proving that you know how to play ball with the big money guys is what separates real statewide candidates from the dilettantes.

  28. mediawatch

Best I can tell, none of Byrd’s clients would be doing any business with the Treasurer’s office.

  29. Nuttingham

    The comments started getting rough
    The campaign staff was rocked.
If not for the funding of his donor crew.
    The Flowers could be lost.
    The Flowers could be lost.

  30. geezer

    Nuttingham wins the thread.

  31. John Manifold

Why’s Bob Byrd nurturing Flowers? He’s got to be taught, before it’s too late.
