A different kind of temper tantrum

Filed in National by on October 3, 2013

You know when your toddler throws a temper tantrum because you told him or her that they cannot have something they want, like a toy or something random in the super market? And then there are times when they just freak out for no fucking reason discernible to any thinking rational person? Nothing calms them. They don’t know what they want. They want something, and they are furious about not getting it, they just don’t know what it is.

Obviously, Republicans are acting like petulant children having a temper tantrum. That is not in dispute by anyone with an IQ above 5. But I thought it was because we Democrats and the President told the Republicans they could not have something they really really wanted. But now

A Republican congressman said Wednesday that his party has “to get something out of” the shutdown fight. He just doesn’t know what.

“We’re not going to be disrespected,” Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) told the Washington Examiner. “We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.”

You will be disrespected. You will get nothing. You will be destroyed.

I just asked my most apolitical friend, “What’s your take on all of this?” Most of the times I know he would say something about how both sides are at fault, but this time he said, “Oh it is clearly the Republicans trying to screw with the President. That’s obvious.” He seemed pissed off and went on to add, “It is asinine and frankly un-American what the Republicans are doing.”

Republicans who do not have the votes to repeal Obamacare through the processes of democracy threatened to close the federal government, to throw hundreds of thousands of innocent government employees out of work, and to damage the nation’s economy unless the Senate and the President acceded to their demands. By threatening to wreak havoc with the national interest and inflicting serious harm on hard-working, loyal public employees, they are attempting to coerce rather than to persuade the government into doing what they want. The House Republicans, in short, are holding the nation itself hostage to their demands. This is not democratic governance. This is extortion, plain and simple. In any other circumstance, this would be criminal conduct.

We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.

Isn’t that basically the same statement that got Rod Blagojevich convicted? Referring to his open Senate appointment, Blago was taped saying:

“I’ve got this thing, and it’s fucking golden. I’m just not giving it up for fucking nothing.”[

They actually expect Obama to help them save face… and after all the crap they’ve sent his way.

But he has given them an undeserved hand up so many times before; they have every reason to expect it again. The risk now is a Dem cave on some kind of Grand Bargain, which Obama has said he wants anyway. We could end up with Social Security cuts out of this.

Obama’s Dec. 7 2010 press conference is a useful compendium of all his political mistakes, especially those that got us to this point. That is the one where, among other things, Obama said:

I’ll take John Boehner at his word — that nobody, Democrat or Republican, is willing to see the full faith and credit of the United States government collapse

The fear of being disrespected sounds like the thugs that they rail so hard against. What is disrespectful of not meeting your unreasonable demands? The President has had HUGE amounts of disrespect thrown at him for the past 5 years, yet pushing back is disrespectful.

On second thought, perhaps they just think a black man standing up for what is right is disrespectful. That theory has some merit.

LG, this is america. If you’re black, you should be thanking the GOP every day for your freedom they gave you (a government handout…. it was quite a compromise on their part) and be damn glad they don’t reinstate slavery. I mean shit! Black people don’t even VOTE for Repubs…. that’s VERY disrespectful.
