A few questions about ‘The Way We Were’
I just saw ‘The Way We Were’ for the first time last night. Undeniably a great movie, but I have a couple of questions.
1) What’s with Hubble’s hair? They do a great job with verisimilitude in other ways, but Hubble has the same 1973 haircut from the 30’s through the war into the 50’s. C’Mon Sydney Pollack.
2) What does Katie do for work? It has something to do with radio and she is active in politics, but her character is a little one dimensional. Barbara Streisand looks absolutely amazing though and there are tons of beauty shots, so it doesn’t matter much. I just wanted to know more about Katie?
3) Redford looks good in that Navel Officers uniform. That’s not really a question, but is just distracting how good Redford looks in that thing. I’m 47 and it made me want to join the Navy. Knock it off Hollywood.
4) Why do Katie and Hubble break up? I know Hubble has a fling with that brittle looking mayonnaise sandwich, and then later marries another (even more) brittle looking mayonnaise sandwich – but so what? Wasn’t Katie worth working on that character flaw? Was the fling enough to break up the marriage? WEAK! Plus I guarantee Hubble spent 30 of the next 40 years thinking about Katie, so I don’t get the break-up. Move out of Hollywood, and work from Chicago for God’s sake. Don’t throw away the best, most alive thing you stumbled over in your whole stupid “everything comes easy” all American boy charmed life.
Shoot! I’m going to have to watch this movie again – in order to answer your questions. How the hell, at the age of 47, did you miss this movie?
I hate homework.
For a 1973 film it seems to hold up well. You will not regret rewatching it.
Hubble was purely amazing in the Navy uniform. It’s worth re-watching just for that.
I am 55, and actually did not see the movie until about 12 or 15 years ago either. I have watched it at least 100 times since then.
Winds of War came on Net flix recently. I had never seen it before. Mini series from 80’s about the lives of two families, the Jastros and Henrys before and during the beginning of world war II.
Absolutely outstanding. Some real good actors , Ali Macgraw, Jan Michael Vincent, Rober Mitchem, John Housman, and others. Series has 6 or 7 episodes, total of about 15 hours
Outstanding, I highly recommend.
I’ve never seen it, I didn’t know I was missing anything.
