Now Accepting 2013 MVP Nominees!

Filed in Delaware by on December 3, 2013

I am El Somnambulo, and I am a listaholic.

Yes, the 2013 MVP (Most Valuable to the Progressive Cause in Delaware) list is coming soon. As soon as I write it, in fact.

This Top Ten list reflects those Delawareans who most contributed to the advancement of progressive causes in the year-gone-by.

Those on the list don’t even have to be progressives (Tony DeLuca and John Sigler have made it, and that doesn’t even include the 2010 winner…) , but they have to have made at least one signature contribution to the cause.

Once again, I seek your nominees. Several of your suggestions have made it onto previous lists. Speaking of MVP lists (I am, after all, a listaholic), here are the previous annual MVP lists:

  1. jason330 says:

I nominate Ezra Temko. He has done yoeman’s work with the Delaware ADA Chapter.

  2. Delaware Dem says:

I nominate State Representative Paul Baumbach and State Senator Bryan Townsend.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

I see that Senator Townsend won it last year. No repeat championships! LOL. I will just nominate Baumbach alone then.

    2009–SENATOR KAREN PETERSON (D)
2010–GOP SENATE NOMINEE AND FORMER WITCH CHRISTINE O’DONNELL (R)
    2011–SENATOR DAVE SOKOLA (D)
    2012–SENATOR BRYAN TOWNSEND (D)

  4. Idealist says:

I second the Ezra Temko nomination. I also think Sarah McBride deserves recognition for her work in support of LGBT equality in Delaware.

  5. Jason330 says:

    Plus she is hot.

  6. Nuttingham says:

You can’t say Ezra without topping him with Erik Schramm, whose organizing got a number of bills through this year.

  7. Steve Newton says:

Can an avowed non-progressive say (recognizing talent and integrity even among the “opposition”) that I heartily second (or third) the nomination of Paul Baumbach?

If you have not had the opportunity to watch him work up close, you will not understand how effective the combination of ethics, guts, organization, and just the right amount of killer instinct can be.

  8. James says:

I second Sarah McBride – what 22 (?) year old successfully passes a controversial bill through the legislature while educating a state?

Erik Schramm and Rep. Paul Baumbach are definitely a must.

  9. Steve: You may not consider yourself as a progressive.

    However, definitions aside, you’re invaluable.

Keep the suggestions coming, everybody. We’ve had some great ones, including some I would never have come up with on my own.

  10. Jason330 says:

As good as all these people are, they will always be runners-up to the world champion.

We may never again see a person as valuable to the progressive cause as Christine O’Donnell.

  11. Nuttingham says:

If Paul doesn’t get MVP, he is certainly a lock for Rookie of the Year. He’s the house member progressives have been waiting for – somebody committed to legislative progress, not polemics.

  12. Austin A. says:

I agree with the nominations of:
    Sarah McBride
    Paul Baumbach

    I also nominate:

Andria Bennett – for her work with the foster children and identity protection for minors

Trey Paradee – for his work to get state employees the option for a Roth IRA

Valerie Longhurst of course! she is acting greatly as Majority Leader!

Sen. Gary Simpson – this may come as a shock but he did try and help abolish the death penalty, so I believe in that issue he helped a progressive cause

  13. anon says:

Sarah McBride – it took a lot of courage to do what she did this last session, especially with the tea party/DFPC types flooding Leg Hall to try to derail the legislation. I never once saw her shy away from the haters.

  14. Anono says:

Matt Denn deserves to be on the list.

Agree about Sarah McBride. In addition to her legislative work, like half of the 18-25 year olds in de politics got involved through her organizing.

Party Blevins is an unsung hero. She is the best pro tem in half a century, if not longer.

  15. Calvin Sparks says:

Sarah McBride definately deserves the nod. She has done alot for the progressive cause in this state!

  16. Jason330 says:

I agree. Matt Denn (in spite of his relative lack of hotness.)

  17. Austin A. says:

    Trey Paradee
    Andria Bennett
    Sarah McBride

Those three should def be on the list for sure

  18. A question. I’m a big Matt Denn guy, but what did he do this year to earn inclusion? Serious question, not snark. If he announced he was running for governor, now, THAT would put him on the list for sure…

  19. Paul Calistro says:

Sarah and Eric are both top contenders in my eyes. Governor Jack Markell gets my vote for his leadership in the development of comprehensive reform for youth aging out of foster care.!

  20. Austin A. says:

Paul not to be rude or snarky or anything but I thing Rep. Bennett lead an effort on that better than the Gov did

  21. Paul Calistro says:

Representatives Bennet and Barbieri both worked extremely hard to introduce and guide house bill 163 into law. Governor Markell advocated for a number of years for this to happen and included funding in his proposed budget. In addition he championed deform among his peers on a national as the leader of the National Governors Association

  22. Linda says:

    Sarah!

  23. Mobull says:

Not to be a party pooper… But doesn’t Schramm a business? Are consultants who get paid really the progressive mvps? Why not the equality de folks themselves?

  24. Idealist says:

If a consultant is effective at pushing forward progressive causes, I don’t see why they couldn’t be considered a progressive MVP. It’s not like legislators aren’t getting paid for their work.
