Coons has $3 mil in the bank, no opponent, and he keeps asking for money, anyway? Inquiring minds of irked Democrats want to know why

His campaign has basically taken over the Del Dem HQ building in New Castle, and they have been phonebanking every Wednesday and Saturday since February. In fact, I was in a meeting in the conference room at the Del Dem HQ last week, and I got a fundraising call from the Coons campaign from the next room over.

There is being prepared, and then there is overkill. Time to take the gas pedal off the floorboard a little bit, Senator. Hopefully the Senator will spread the wealth to Carney and the Coordinated Campaign once it is known that he (Coons) will not have an opponent

Umm, I think that the Republicans have a history of announcing their candidates in July. Seems like a strategy they like. We can’t breathe easy yet.

  2. We can’t breathe easy with Coons in office, either.

Especially since announcing candidates in July is just another way of waving the white, and I mean, white, flag.

    @AD: Who’s “we,” kemosabe?

  4. Mike says:

It is just smart. Biden ran a full campaign in 2010 while funding a big portion of the coordinated. There is great data to be gleaned, advocates to be nurtured and fundraising allies to make with or without a credible opponent.

  5. Mike says:

Further, this line of thinking really irks me. Chaps my ass if you will! Volunteers and small donors identify with Coons in a way your normally do not see in Delaware. They had a true grassroots campaign in 2010 that fueled victories for numerous down ballot candidates that paid off huge. Having a well structured, true campaign is incredibly smart and will continue this trend in 2014 (and 2016 when most volunteers will be working in other states for the eventual nominee). Without something like this…do you really want to rely on the ineffective local un-targeted lit drop style campaigns? Coons’ campaign is engaging voters in key districts throughout the State. They know what they are doing… Glad someone does!

  6. Delaware Dem says:

Far enough Mike. And so long as Coons is sharing the “wealth,” so to speak, in terms of his volunteers’ enthusiasm supporting those down the ticket, then it is a good thing when put that way. Sorry to chap your ass. LOL.

  7. Mitch Crane says:

He is sharing the weath. He has been totally supportive of my efforts in Sussex. That goes for volunteers, financial support, and candidate support. Senator Coons is campaigning with two candidates tomorrow and others are scheduled. If I had a wish list of all the Coons campaign could do to support my efforts, he would fulfill every reasonable wish

  8. Geezer says:

And once more we see many readers of this site confusing “Democrat” with “liberal.” I see no reason to celebrate Chris Coons’ ability to cement his sleazy corporate agenda into a perpetual hold on a Senate seat.

What part of corporatism are you folks confusing with liberalism?

  9. Mike says:

Can win em all, Geezer. In a world where I could have a Senator do 100% of what I want, I’ll take it but we don’t have that. I’ll go with someone who does MOST of what I like, only a couple things I dislike and keeps the party well funded and active….

  10. cassandra m says:

I wonder what you *do* win. This is a Senator in a safe Blue state that can’t support fixing Social Security or stopping voter suppression.

But you do see how this all works in practice — the Senator doesn’t have to represent the people he represents if he spreads enough money around.

  11. MikeM2784 says:

Don’t forget he also voted against a nominee who fulfilled his duty under the Constitution to provide legal defense for a murderer. I liked Chris when he worked for New Castle, but some of his decisions recently leave me puzzled.

  12. Geezer says:

I haven’t the slightest interest in keeping the Democratic Party “well-funded and active.” Very few of its office-holding members are left of center on economic issues, and is therefore part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

His vote against Adegbile was shocking, but his saber-rattling over Israel’s agenda is the deal-breaker for me. When you’re against me on economics and war, why am I voting you into national office?

  13. Jason330 says:

    That vote was especially execrable.

  14. John Young says:

    Jason, words, FTW.

“Volunteers and small donors identify with Coons in a way your normally do not see in Delaware.”

I was one of them. I stood up and cheered when he declared against Castle. I sent him money and asked how I could help. Then, everything changed when he wasn’t running against Castle anymore. Two weeks before the election he flip-flopped on tax cuts for the rich, which was a screaming red flag for the disappointments to come.

  16. SussexWatcher says:

It sounds like Coons is setting himself up as the next leader of the Delaware Democratic Party. For decades, that’s been Tom Carper, as the biggest man on the scene; it’s now nominally Markell, but with his term ending and no clear way to move up, loyalty to Jack seems to be waning as well. Coons is playing the long game.

If he can build a giant war chest now and use it to support and strengthen county, GA and statewide candidates over this cycle and 2016, he will have a firm grip on the party machinery and the loyalties of many elected officials – definitely more so than an equally-wealthy but aloof Beau. Coons can then be the kingmaker if it comes to a Biden-Denn-Gordon-Flowers race. And something tells me he’s not going to be backing Tommy …
