In a Democratic wave year, like this one, the primary is the election.

Rehoboth Beach — Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Kathy McGuiness has filed to run as a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in the 2016 state election.

McGuiness said she would formally announce her candidacy in the near future.

A five-term commissioner in Rehoboth, McGuiness has served two separate terms. Her first four terms were consecutive from August 2000 until January 2013 when she resigned her seat to spend more time at her family’s second home in Park City, Utah. After returning to the Rehoboth area full time in 2014, McGuiness once again ran for a seat as commissioner and won a fifth term in office.

A businesswoman and pharmacist by trade, McGuiness was one of the founding members of Rehoboth Beach Main Street and served with the organization until December 2014.

“My public service and private-sector experience makes me the most qualified to serve the citizens of Delaware. I will take this year to work very hard, meet folks up and down the state to earn their vote,” she said.

what a joke all of these candidates are. i mean if this isn’t the sign of the last gasps of the dying empire that is the delaware democratic party i dont know what is

  2. Jason330 says:

In other Lt Gov News, check out Celia getting all up in BHL’s grill:

“Lieutenant governor could be a good race for Hall-Long. Since the Republicans do not have a candidate, her husband would not have any of their campaign signs to take down.”

    Oh snap!

  3. Mitch Crane says:

The Democrats considering running for Lt Governor are all qualified. While none are state legislators ( as if that is a requirement) all have been successful at the local level. While Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Kathy McGuiness is the first to formally file, other are campaigning and have announced their intentions to file. In order of their announcing that intention they are:

    1. Former Sussex County Register of Wills Greg Fuller
    2. Kent County Levy Court Commissioner Brad Eaby
    3. Wilmington City Councilwoman Sherry Dorsey Walker
    4. New Castle County Register of Wills Ciro Poppiti.

All 5 have been deeply involved in their communities, outside of political office. All not only represent there is a deep bench, but they are also the next generation of public servant.

And the Republican field consists of…………?

  4. liberalgeek says:

How can someone officially file before the filing fees have been set?

  5. Jason330 says:

“And the Republican field consists of…………?”

It doesn’t matter. The Dem who can pull a 28% plurality in that crowded Dem field is taking it home. This is going to be a classic GOTV win on a very granular level.

  6. Mitch Crane says:

The Democratic State Executive Committee set the filing fee for statewide offices at its meeting last Saturday. The subdivisions will set the filing fee for legislative and lesser offices. My county party will take it up this month.

There are no Republicans because sane Republicans who want to seek statewide office (both of them) know it is likely to be a Democratic year-and they are waiting to see of Joe jumps in to the presidential race. A Biden candidacy, Republicans fear, will bring Republican losses down ballot .

  7. John Manifold says:

Poppiti has been roundly praised for his work as Register of Wills.

  8. Donviti says:

The great thing about a Lt Governor in this state is that it’s a spring board for the coveted and logical next step as Attorney General

  9. The Godfather says:

Mitch Crane: Qualified > To me the qualification for Lt Governor is that you are able to be Governor. You’re starting to frighten me when you suggest that they represent a deep bench and the next generation of leadership.
We have two register of Wills and two city council women(one in her first term) a Levy court Commissioner. Is there something in the Sussex County water? Earlier you endorsed Navarro(my father was an insurance agent) for Insurance Commissioner. As a party leader, you responsibility is to help find good candidates not encouraging the unqualified. Celia suggested that Bethany Hall Long may be considering running for Lt Governor. If that’s true, you and other party leaders should be encouraging her. To me she represents the kind of qualified candidate that really could be a part of the next generation of leadership and one that could take over as Governor, but that also has the experience with State Government and the stature to help John Carney govern. The gaggle that have announced fall far short. Mitch– time to call Bethany

  10. Mitch Crane says:

Godfather, Bethany Hall-Long is indeed qualified. She and I speak frequently. If she were to run, she would certainly be a front runner.

We disagree on qualifications for office. Being in elected office is one indication of a person’s qualifications, but there is much more. I also look at education, professional experience, civic involvement, position on issues, ability to lead and influence others. I add to that integrity.

I did not “endorse” Trini. As a party official, I will endorse no one until the Party does or until the voters do at the Primary. What I have stated is that Trini Navarro has my personal support based on his qualifications as stated above.

  11. If you publicly announce that someone has your personal support, how does that differ from an endorsement? My language skills must not be what they used to be.

  12. Dave says:

I believe it is categorized as a “distinction without a difference.”

  13. Milli Vanilli says:

    Deez Nuts for LG

  14. The Godfather says:

Mitch Crane : “but there’s much more.”If you apply the items that you consider for a personal endorsement from you, how could you possibly consider Navarro qualified let alone endorsable. Since they are in charge of the endorsement process, State and County chairs should remain and appear to be objective and impartial and not indicate their personal preferences be known—such is the price of leadership

  15. Jim McGiffin says:

Brad Eaby is certainly qualified for the job. He is smart and talented and has a good deal of experience at the county level.

Well she looks pretty hot, so let’s go for it!
