Rehoboth Beach — Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Kathy McGuiness has filed to run as a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in the 2016 state election.

McGuiness said she would formally announce her candidacy in the near future.

A five-term commissioner in Rehoboth, McGuiness has served two separate terms. Her first four terms were consecutive from August 2000 until January 2013 when she resigned her seat to spend more time at her family’s second home in Park City, Utah. After returning to the Rehoboth area full time in 2014, McGuiness once again ran for a seat as commissioner and won a fifth term in office.

A businesswoman and pharmacist by trade, McGuiness was one of the founding members of Rehoboth Beach Main Street and served with the organization until December 2014.

“My public service and private-sector experience makes me the most qualified to serve the citizens of Delaware. I will take this year to work very hard, meet folks up and down the state to earn their vote,” she said.
