We are 3 for 3

The remaining member of our Congressional delegation, Congressman John Carney (D), came out in favor of the Iran Deal yesterday.

His statement from his Facebook page:

After much thought and consideration, I have decided to support the Iran nuclear deal. I appreciate hearing from so many of you on this issue, and I know this is something many feel passionately about.

I am under no illusions that we can count on Iran to adhere to this deal in good faith. That being said, this agreement allows us to immediately ‘snap-back’ sanctions should Iran cheat. It also curtails Iran’s nuclear program by blocking its pathway to a bomb. I do not believe it’s possible to go back to the negotiating table, and I have concluded that this deal is better than no deal at all.

You see, that is why I am so fucking angry at this staged rendering of the garments by Carney and Coons. If Iran reneges on the deal, then guess what? The sanctions get reimposed immediately AND we bomb the ever loving shit out of them. That is obvious to everyone.

I honestly believe we are simply giving themselves enough rope to hang with….I’m surprised the Republicans don’t love the idea. We’ll be able to say “look, we tried to negotiate but they didn’t uphold their end” before launching another war. I hope I’m wrong and that they realize it is in their best interest to comply, but if they don’t, the ability is certainly still there to reimpose sanctions or go the military route. It’s not like they can keep up with us (or Israel via us) militarily speaking.

Exactly. And, hey, maybe, just maybe Iran will live up to the deal, and then it opens up their economy and their culture to the West, and they get integrated into the modern world like they were before the revolution in 1979. With this deal, you have that chance to fundamentally change the dynamic. Without it, you have no shot at it, and the US is universally perceived as the bad guy throughout the world because we unilaterally rejected the deal.

It is such a fucking no-brainer that it boggles the mind that anyone, anyone with an IQ above 5 can be against it.

I support the deal, but I don’t think reimposing sanctions is realistic. We’re not going to convince other countries to bring their Iran investments and interests to a full stop again. That means Plan B is war, so the deal better work.

Also, once you lift sanctions in exchange for nuclear restrictions, what can we do in response to human rights violations or other affronts without releasing Iran from its nuclear promises? When Iran oppresses women, political prisoners, launches ethnic cleansing progams, subverts elections, supports external terror groups – that is the nation we will be investing in and trading with. And we will have to keep mum, because we already traded away the sanctions. Are you prepared for that?

We can only hope that engagement with the world will start to make Iranian leadership more humane. I still support the deal.

Would suggest that Integrating Iran into the world’s economy is our best weapon, and note that Iran is far larger than Iraq and that the assortment of far right fools in the senate that suggest a war would be quick and easy are poor liars at best. Also note that the stench of war remains in American minds, even far right Obama haters in Sussex. It took close to 40 years to get another Quagmire going after Viet Nam and I have no doubt that as a nation we’re stupid enough to do it again, just not this soon.
