Is Bruce Ennis vunerable?

Filed in National by on March 10, 2016

Arguing the affirmative stance is Celia: He is 77, and that is pretty old. Republicans are sending out some whipper snapper named Carl Pace to do jumping jacks or some shit.

Arguing the negative stance is me: 77 is middle-aged for practitioners in the dark arts of Dixiecrat-mancy. Hell….Strom Thurmon lived to 212 years of age by keeping black mistresses, and faithfully reciting his Dixiecrat incantations. Also, the district is 47% D, 27% R and 26% WMFHA (where’s mah fishin’ hat at?)

All of which means nothing. Willie Loman knows everyone in the district. He knows if their Aunt is still suffering from sciatica. He will shuffle on to victory.

Nope, Ennis is not going anywhere unless he wants to retire. Age is not a factor and his constituents are for the most part satisfied. This is Delaware, we rarely get rid of old politicians unless they fall over in public like Bill Roth. And just look at what we got as a replacement!

  2. Like the swallows returning to Capistrano, if the swallows only returned to Capistrano in even-numbered years, Celia Cohen entertains her pipe dream about the R’s taking over the State Senate.

This has been going on ever since R-Sen. Myrna Bair declared herself as Pro-Tem-In-Waiting back in 1996 or so. She went to conference after conference and proclaimed that she would be the first woman Pro-Tem in Delaware history. And there was indeed a good chance that it could happen. Richard Cordrey was retiring, the margin was only 12-9, and the D’s were on the defensive.

But here’s where Tom Sharp deserves credit for being a great poker player. Dick Carter and I, who were the two Administrative Assistants to the caucus at the time, were told in the afternoon that we were required to attend a Caucus dinner that night b/c we’d have to write a press release immediately thereafter. We both were kinda depressed, thinking that Sharp was gonna retire along with Cordrey, making it much more likely that we’d lose the majority.

So, we got to the dinner, we hear a presentation from someone from the Democratic National Committee, who ends up by stressing the importance of caucus-building. We still don’t know what the hell is going on.

Sharp says that he ‘could not agree more’ with the speaker, and then goes on to say, “in fact, in just a few minutes the brand new 13th member of the Senate Democratic Caucus will step through that door. ”

Just like he promised, the new member, escorted by two of Tom Gordon’s finest, stepped through the door. Which is how Margaret Rose Henry officially flipped from an R to D, and how Sen. Myrna Bair’s dream died.

Myrna got over it, but Celia never has. It’s pretty pathetic when you think about it.
