Rash of Break-Ins at Bellevue State Park

Filed in Delaware by on February 1, 2017

One of the good things about The Facebook, beyond helping to organize protests against Trump and finding lost pets, is that periodically points out some inconsistencies going on. For instance, there’s this Facebook post about cars being broken-in at Bellevue State Park.

The two takeaways from this FB post are:

What police agency is responsible for the Delaware state park system?

If there are indeed a rash of break-ins going on at Bellevue State Park, what are the police and state park system planning on doing about it?

Here’s the text of the FB post. The highlights are mine.

**update – almost certain that the plate is Illinois, R21 2137

Yesterday at 3pm, I went to Bellevue state park with my brother’s dog to go for a run. As I approached my car from a distance, I could see the passenger side window was clearly broken. Parked next to my car was a white Hyundai with completely black tinted windows. As I got closer, the car began to pull away. I was able to take a few photos of the car as they made their escape. I believe it was an Illinois license plate, possibly R12 213?
I called 911 right away, as I saw the car leaving. If only there was an officer at the exit to stop them! I waited over an hour in the cold parking lot shivering, waiting for the police. I called the police again and the state troopers told me that the county was on it. So I called the county police. I was told they were too busy to dispatch anybody. I asked for a rough estimate of when someone would arrive because I was freezing.. they couldn’t give me an answer. Eventually it trickled down to the state park police and I was able to file my report.

The officer told me that Bellevue has been experiencing a number of these incidents. “Unfortunately, it’s an easy target being right off of I-95.. they can come in, break into a car, and hop back on the highway.” When I called the officer today, he said he ran variations of that license plate and didn’t come up with anything. He also said “out of 100 of these incidents, maybe only 1 or 2 are caught.”

Sorry for the long winded post. I could go on.. but here is a warning that the state parks aren’t so safe

My id is telling me that parking lot should be staked out by a Second Amendment supporter. I’m going to have to have a serious discussion with my id.

It’s a state park, and there’s a state police troop housed less than a mile away. It may not have been a shooting, an armed robbery or an accident with personal injuries, but that sort of response time is shameful.
