Song Of The Day, Nov. 13, 2017

So I’m watching this film noir on Turner Classic Movies.  It’s called ‘The Window’, it’s really suspenseful and it features this child actor named Bobby Driscoll, who was on loan from Disney. Turns out he was a huge child star at Disney and was the voice of the animated Peter Pan. He was big.  By age 31, he was dead and buried in a NYC potter’s field, largely due to a heroin addiction. A sad story you can read about here.

Wonderful Topanga Canyon troubadour Tom Russell offers the elegaic ‘Farewell Never Never Land’ to keep Driscoll’s memory alive:

Russell also has a great song about actor Sterling Hayden. Maybe Hayden will be in another film noir coming soon to TCM.

  2. I was hoping for a Roy Moore playlist: “Sweet Little 16,” “I Saw Her Standing There” (she was just 17, you know what I mean). What else would be featured?

Okay, Al, you asked for it –

“Jailbait,” by the well known pants-shitter Ted Nugent
“Young Girl,” by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap
    “Seventeen,” by Kip Winger
“I’m in Love with a McDonald’s Girl,” by Dean Friedman
“She’s Always a Woman,” by Billy Joel

And the classic “Jean O’ Bethelnie” aka “Glenlogie,” a classic Scots ballad that’s been done (no pun intended) by just about every Scottish folksinger.

  5. I knew I could count on you, Mike. 😉

On the subject of Tom Russell, who is one of America’s national treasures, he wrote a great song about Mickey Mantle. It’s called “The Kid from Spavinaw,” Possibly the best song about baseball that I’ve ever heard. It’s on YouTube if you have a few minutes to spare.

Who could forget “Go Away Little Girl”-

  8. No, that’s the song he should have listened to.

And don’t forget Tom Russell’s timely “Who’s Gonna Build Your Wall?” (but written before Trump). Thanks, El Som, for getting his name out there. This and “Sterling Hayden” also on youtube.

“As I travel around this great big world
The thing that I most fear
Is a white man in a golf shirt
With a cell phone in his ear”

“If I’d have known I was gonna live this long/I’d have taken better of myself.”

    Hi, Al,

I almost forgot about this one:

“Thank Heaven for Little Girls,” by Maurice Chevalier

That song is responsible for one of the funniest (perhaps the only funny) scenes in the movie “My Father the Hero,” which starred Gerard Depardieu.
