Filed in National by on February 6, 2018

We all know about one-hit wonders. I’m especially intrigued by artists who created one great song and virtually nothing else.  I love this song from a band that has little else to recommend it. Where does such isolated inspiration come from? You tell me:

Good one, had a haunting vibe about it that was different to say the least.

  2. For some reason, this song filled me with nostalgia, even when I first heard it back in the ’80’s.

Mentioning John F. Kennedy and the Beatles will do that for folks of a certain age.

This one wasn’t as good, but I always liked it. Never released as a single:

  4. I think it was the home movie footage. Reminded me of my parents’ home movies. In fact, I hadn’t seen the video in quite some time, and I’d forgotten that the band appeared in the video. It was the rest of it that’s so evocative.

It works the same way in Springsteen’s original “Atlantic City” video — lots of found black-and-white footage give it an air of desperation that fits the song perfectly.

I’ve never been to any of the NJ beach towns except Cape May. Might do some exploring this spring. Looks like Atlantic City is not a good one?

  7. Alby says:

If you’re accustomed to the Delaware resorts, most of the coast between Cape May and Atlantic City has more in common with Ocean City, Md. — not the high rises, but very heavily populated beaches and boardwalk. If you’re looking for something more like the Delaware towns, smaller and lower key, try Long Beach Island, north of A.C.

Ocean City, NJ is low key. No bars, family type place. Very relaxing.

  9. Alby says:

Very crowded. And dull. Very, very dull.

  10. Gerry W says:

Joe Biden, the working class guy from you know ah “Steel Towns Claymont and Scranton”, spent his summers in the very working class beach town of Avalon.
