Before he became Jingle Writer To Spec for Disney, Randy Newman created a canon of unforgettable (and often loathsome) characters in his songs.  Pretty much the stories of their lives in under 4 minutes.  This week, I focus on those characters and their songs.     ‘When She loved me’ and ‘You’ve got a friend in me’ are simply great songs. They may have been written for Disney’s filthy money, but the statue of David was made for Florence’s influential woolen cloth guild’s filthy money.

    I love Newman. This week, I’m gonna concentrate on his story songs and character sketches. Hey, that shouldn’t stop the rest of you from linking to your faves.

    BTW, I don’t at all begrudge Randy’s Disney riches. I’m happy for him. Just want to focus on songs the young’uns might not know. At least this week.

    Irony! A commenter said this is where Ben Carson learned the history of American slavery. Not obscure, but worth another listen.
