OOTWG’s (Old Out of Touch White Guys) Lost Big Yesterday

Filed in National by on May 9, 2018

We know that there is no guarantee that a woman is going to make a better legislator simply by virtue of being a women, and yet these are the kinds of numbers that could keep “Tired” Tom Carper awake at night.

Women had a very good night in Tuesday’s primaries in Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

Democratic women, in particular, had a great showing in all four states. Twenty-two Democratic female candidates won their respective primaries (including four incumbents). Five Republican women candidates were the winners of their primaries (including three incumbents).

In a year in which a record number of women stepped up to run for the House of Representatives, the first big primary night of 2018 shows that women aren’t just running — they’re winning.

Here are the Democratic women who won their House primaries in each state:

Indiana
Courtney Tritch (IN-3)
Tobi Beck (IN-4)
Dee Thornton (IN-5)
Jeannine Lake (IN-6)
Liz Watson (IN-9)

North Carolina
Linda Coleman (NC-2)
D.D. Adams (NC-5)
Kyle Horton (NC-7)
Incumbent Rep. Alma Adams (NC-12)
Kathy Manning (NC-13)

Ohio
Jill Schiller (OH-2)
Incumbent Rep. Joyce Beatty (OH-3)
Janet Garrett (OH-4)
Shawna Roberts (OH-6)
Vanessa Enoch (OH-8)
Incumbent Rep. Marcy Kaptur (OH-9)
Theresa Gasper (OH-10)
Incumbent Rep. Marcia Fudge (OH-11)
Betsy Rader (OH-14)
Susan Moran Palmer (OH-16)

West Virginia
Kendra Fershee (WV-1)
Talley Sergent (WV-2)

    I’m horrified, Elizabeth.

    – Trump just proposed an $8OO million cut to Medicare.
    – Paul Ryan committed to passing it through the House.
    – Reports say he could release a bill for a vote as soon as TODAY.
    – If we don’t fight back and save Medicare NOW, Republicans will bankrupt and abandon millions of seniors!

I’m calling on every grassroots Democrat to fight back and help save Medicare.

We need a massive 24-hour fundraising surge to fight back against Trump and Paul Ryan’s heartless attack on seniors.

This moment requires our immediate action. I need 15,OOO gifts before midnight tomorrow.

    Nancy Pelosi

While Russia and Stormygate occupy the corporate media, hundreds of issues that will damage our citizens are being covered…LIKE robbing medicare…the ELDERLY still vote.

Elect MORE women….we don’t let the little head over rule the big head. We work with both sides of our brains, and we are well just smarter. 2018 is the year of women. Women are feeling, we arent going to take it any more, our life experiences give us an edge. The Pink Wave is coming, women are energized, and vocal because we have been controlled by men all of our history. Sexual harassment and assault will be exposed everywhere. . We need a government that is actually, for the people by the people..that means 50% of our legislative offices must have women.

  3. RSE says:

“We work with both sides of our brains, and we are well just smarter.”

That’s a pretty generalized statement. Men and women are different and have specific strengths derived through evolution. Neither one is smarter than the other as a whole…Maybe you have been listening to too much Grateful Dead.

  4. Alby says:

@RSE: Ever notice that when someone says “we” are something, they’re generally trying to take credit for what others under the umbrella have done?

Consider white supremacists. You certainly can’t prove their theory by the people who espouse it. They’re basically asking for credit for the stuff other white people have done.

This is a lot like that.

  5. mouse says:

    I hate old white men

  6. RSE says:

Wow, you hate Jimmy Carter. I never really liked his politics much, but how can you hate a guy like Jimmy Carter? What about Albert Einstein? Abraham Lincoln? Does your prejudice include dead old white men, or is it just the live ones that you hate?

  7. nathan arizona says:

You hate me Mouse? Screw you. Go collect some seashells. (Not sure what your age requirements are for being “old,” but still.)

  8. Alby says:

I think you guys are missing the self-deprecating humor. Unless I’ve been misled by his comments over the years, Mouse is himself an old white man.

  9. nathan arizona says:

I haven’t seen that much actual humor from Mouse. And if he’s an old white guy himself, maybe he’s just self-hating. He wouldn’t be alone.

  10. RE Vanella says:

    I love mouse.

  11. Ben says:

I hate old white guys too.
Nate-Az, here are my terms… Carper.. old white guy.
    Arpaio… old white guy.
    Bernie… high level Jewish power-mage.
    Ben Carson.. old white guy.
    Devos… Old white guy.
    Steven Miller.. old white guy.
    get it?

  12. nathan arizona says:

Ben: I realize it’s a political trope to hate all old white guys (or, yes, other people you regard as thinking like that)), or maybe just white guys in general, or maybe just anybody who doesn’t share your particular brand of progressivism. I understand it refers to what you think of as systemic guilt for anybody who hasn’t been previously marginalized. But it’s simplistic and boring. And it costs you supporters of your general cause.

Stephen Miller is a millennial, unless you’re referring to somebody else.

Usually I like Mouse just fine.

  13. RE Vanella says:

You’re stepping on the joke. Poetic license. Rhetorical flourish. Etc.

It’s not simplistic or boring. It’s like Fuck the Police.

Ok, Ok, there was this one cop this one time who saved me cat from a storm drain.

    Stop being a pedant.

  14. Ben says:

Stephen Miller may be 33, but he’s an old white guy. I reject him and Tammy Larpin’ from this generation. She’s an old white guy too.
NIce use of “your supporters” and “your cause”… guess you dont count yourself as someone who wants equality. too bad.

  15. nathan arizona says:

It just seems like a poor political strategy. And sometimes it’s tiresome to keep on hearing it. But looking back I can see what Ben did is kind of clever. Maybe I just want funnier insults.

Ben: There’s an extreme left and a less extreme left. I guess I count myself as part of the latter.

  16. Ben says:

    Seriously?
All you do is moan about how the “extreme” left is”losing voters”. A fully CENTRIST ticket lost in 2016. Centrists (carper) failed to pass Obama’s real agenda. Centrists got booted in 2010 and 2014. The left-right scale has been artificially dragged to the right and people who want to occupy the center (you, champ) drift right and scoff at those of us who stick to our principles. stand for something other than “compromise” To the REAL enemy, you’re like a tool they can use to never compromise on anything.

  17. nathan arizona says:

Centrist? Did I say centrist? I’m just somewhere on the non-fanatic left. You might do better that way yourself. Champ. Maybe the possibility of the left losing voters should be a legitimate concern. Unless you prefer losing to conservatives, but with “honor.”
