Carper Mum on Harris Debate Challenge

Filed in National by on August 2, 2018

Carper has yet to respond to a debate challenge issued by Kerri Harris.

Progressive civil rights activist and U.S. Senate hopeful Kerri Evelyn Harris has officially challenged Senator Tom Carper to a debate as she seeks the seat that the longtime incumbent has held for nearly two decades.

Harris spoke out exclusively with Delaware 105.9 on Wednesday to officially challenge Carper to a debate and said it was “imperative that voters get to hear who they’re actually voting for and why. I have to explain to you why you should follow me and he should have to explain the same thing.”

In an interview with reporter Rob Petree, Harris said voters should have a right to know where both she and Sen. Carper stand on a host of issues in the form of a debate…

“If we’re only dependent on reading articles to get to know who you’re voting on, then you’re missing a whole area that becomes gray and that’s a problem,” Harris said. “People need to know where I stand and where he stands on healthcare, education, water quality, and creating quality jobs.”

Harris said Sussex County lacks the infrastructure to encourage companies to locate here and that Sen. Carper has failed to do what he said he would.

“We keep hearing that he is going to create this great system, but he’s had decades to make it happen and we’re failing here and that’s a problem,” Harris explained. “I want to know personally where he’s going to stand and if I get the opportunity to do so I want to do it in front of everybody, with him there to be able to rebuttal, and for me to show that I am the best candidate.”

Not surprised, Carper views a debate as acknowledging Harris and the discontent with him as a senator that she symbolizes. Cowardly and typical all in one.

  2. Good. Why she didn’t do this months ago is beyond me.

    But keep it up.

  3. RE Vanella says:

Because no one was paying attention months ago except for about 3 people. Way easier for Carper to ignore because 99.5% of everyone else was also ignoring.

Carper had a lady canvassing my neighbourhood yesterday. All doors got a campaign piece but mine! I guess they knew not to waste it…

  4. When you’re the challenger, you have to MAKE people pay attention.

I still think Kerri can win. But I’m frustrated that, IMHO, the campaign simply frittered away a lot of time. Perhaps too much. Don’t mistake my frustration for a lack of support, but, DAMN!

  5. mouse says:

The damn party should always support debate when there’s a primary challenge but the party doesn’t want debate or questions. Carper looks pretty scary these days when he speaks

  6. RE Vanella says:

I know we’re you’re coming from. I’m just arguing that doing thing to MAKE people pay attention is double edged. Challenging Carper to a debate in May could very easily be counterproductive I think. Moreover, what leverage did she have before filling?

This is how he won all those years ago, he’s never going to do it. Just watch the Ceasar Rodney, ride the Pony video from earlier this week. He is not right in the head and we all know that.

Agree with REV. To everything there is a season. Turn, turn, turn

BTW – I don’t think Carper will be able to make it through day 2 of not commenting on this.

  10. RE Vanella says:

Senator Tom Carper owns between $315k & $650k of investments in Dow-Dupont. DuPont is also his 3rd largest contributor.

These conflicts of interest may explain why he did little to oppose a merger that is bad for Delaware.

Last election when Carper was running there was a guy that was challenging him in the primary. When the guy asked him, “So when are we going to debate?” Carper replied with a date.

It was the day after the primary election.

He doesn’t do debates. He only does candidate forums where lots of candidates will be in attendance so he doesn’t have to talk much. Or defend attacks.

Tell Kerri to bring an empty chair.

Castle wouldn’t debate O’Donnell either. In Castle’s case it was at least somewhat understandable – I don’t think he could pander to the lunatic fringe on the right and then pivot back easily enough to win the general, so he decided to ignore it and hope it went away. Turned out to be a catastrophic miscalculation.

  14. golden eye says:

its hard to make people pay attention about issues in Delaware when every other damn post on her shit is about another politician in NYC or some place who probably cant find Delaware on a map or could give two shits about Delaware.

…or at least a little nervousness around team Carper. a few days ago I pulled up at a stoplight in Newark next to a well dressed woman in an Audi with a backseat full of Carper yard signs. I still haven’t seen any yard signs in yards tho.

anyway…As far as trolls go, at least GE makes an occasional valid point.
