  1. For those who don’t know the song’s history, Steve Goodman saw Arlo Guthrie at a Chicago bar and asked if he could play a song for him. Guthrie said OK, with conditions — Goodman had to buy him a beer, and could only play until Guthrie finished drinking it.

    Goodman busted out “City of New Orleans,” which Guthrie liked so much he recorded it. It reached #18 on the Hot 100, the only Top 20 hit of Guthrie’s career.
