Whatever happens tonight, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Kerri Harris. When everyone knew Carper needed to face a primary opponent to call him out on his record, she did it.
That said…what are the nuts and bolts of what needs to happen at tonight’s debate?
Carper:
Even though he hasn’t faced a challenger in 70 years, I’m expecting a sharp, well-prepared Tom Carper. He’ll talk about what a great job he has been doing…how many unions and “working people” have endorsed him and probably about being a hero of the environment. He’ll tell some longwinded story about some constituent problem he worked out, but I’d expect him to avoid talking about his famous bipartisanship, save possibly a mention of his dear friend – John McCain.
Harris:
The challenger needs to keep the heat on Carper’s record without appearing to be the “angry left.” Of course that means whatever TV pundits want it to mean so it is hard for anyone on the side of the middle class to thread that needle. Carper’s record is so objectively horrible, it may be tough for Harris to leave some of the atrocious votes undiscussed in the interest of time.
