Debate prep and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Coming to Delaware

Filed in National by on August 27, 2018

Whatever happens tonight, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Kerri Harris. When everyone knew Carper needed to face a primary opponent to call him out on his record, she did it.

That said…what are the nuts and bolts of what needs to happen at tonight’s debate?

Carper:
Even though he hasn’t faced a challenger in 70 years, I’m expecting a sharp, well-prepared Tom Carper. He’ll talk about what a great job he has been doing…how many unions and “working people” have endorsed him and probably about being a hero of the environment. He’ll tell some longwinded story about some constituent problem he worked out, but I’d expect him to avoid talking about his famous bipartisanship, save possibly a mention of his dear friend – John McCain.

Harris:
The challenger needs to keep the heat on Carper’s record without appearing to be the “angry left.” Of course that means whatever TV pundits want it to mean so it is hard for anyone on the side of the middle class to thread that needle. Carper’s record is so objectively horrible, it may be tough for Harris to leave some of the atrocious votes undiscussed in the interest of time.

Did you hear that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be coming to Delaware next week?

She will be co-hosting two town halls with Kerri on Friday August 31st. The first town hall will be held in Newark at 1pm at the Trabant University Center Theater (17 W Main Street, Newark, DE 19716) and the second town hall will be in Wilmington at 5pm at Kingswood Community Center (2300 Bowers St., Wilmington, DE 19802).

These town halls will focus on addressing economic inequality and criminal justice reform.

We’re really excited for these events and hope to see you there!

I haven’t seen Tom Carper campaign this hard since he beat my dad in the early eighties. I knew it was serious when Roger Stone told my brother and me that we couldn’t go to any more keg parties.

  2. RSE, what was Paula Parkinson like?

  3. RSE says:

I don’t know, ask your mom.

  4. Alby says:

Sounds like we’d learn more from asking your mom.

  5. RSE says:

Touche or whatever. I appreciate good banter.

  6. Jim c says:

Is the debate going to be on radio?

  7. Jason330 says:

I can’t post from in this auditorium so I’ll be texting updated JasonM at Blue Delaware

  8. SussexWatcher says:

Someone needs to ask a question, or Kerri needs to make a point, that gets under Carper’s skin and makes him lose his shit.

  9. You can go to the Delaware Online homepage and watch online.

  10. BTW, I’m not encouraged by the early questions from the panel.

  11. CHRIST, Carper seems real nervous. Stuttering and fumbling for his words.

  12. Jim C says:

yes, Carper seemed nervous and almost lost at a couple of places. The hand went up to make a point but the brain and the mouth took a while to kick in.
I will not be voting for Carper.
Hey Coons, you’re next to go!

  13. Although I think Kerri missed a couple of chances to nail Carper on his record, she was incredibly passionate and empathetic. She more than did what she had to do tonight.

I really think she can win…and the momentum will build all week.

I LOVED the way she skewered Carper after he said that he’d voted for Kavanaugh b/c he’d spoken to a couple of Delaware Way insiders and they said he was a good guy. That’s everything that’s wrong with this state, and Carper, in a nutshell. And Kerri nailed him on it.

  14. jason330 says:

    That was a great moment.

I agree that there were times during the banking Q’s that she could have dropped an anvil on Carper’s head – but that only would have made a great night for the campaign utterly fantastic.

  15. I think that she had decided not to be too aggressive. She sometimes alluded to Carper’s corporate corruption, but held back on dropping the hammer. Pretty sure it was strategic.

  16. Steve says:

Other than Gay Pride I haven’t seen Kerri doing any campaigning below the canal.

    Have I missed something?

  17. RE Vanella says:

    Yes, you have.

She’s had many Town Halls from Rehoboth to Seaford. She did one specifically on water quality issues. About 2 weeks ago her and her team stayed in Sussex for about 5 days never coming north.

Last weekend she did a round table sponsored by Delaware Women for Inclusion I think they’re called. (Not 100% on the name.) It was I believe in Lewes… (It’s was at “the beach” which for a city cat like me is all the same!)

Also, there is a campaign office in Sussex. (One in each county.)

Our man in Sussex is mouse. He may know more details.
