Oct. 9 Open Thread: This Just In… Tom Carper Loves Big Pharma…That Is All

The State News looked into the anti-Carper full-page mailers attacking him for his Big Pharma ties. They found the Patients for Affordable Drugs Action but didn’t get a whole lot of answers about any kind of strategic connection among the group’s targets. They did find that the money comes from a Concerned Billionaire while the organization is fronted by a cancer patient whose life-extending drugs cost $300,000 a year. Because an industry reaping nearly $5 billion annually from men seeking the boners of their youth is perpetually strapped for cash. WARNING: Reading Carper response may cause nausea, hot flashes and teeth-grinding. Do not read while operating heavy machinery.

For live-entertainment fans who want to splurge on tickets to see some really big stars, the choices just got wider: Why pay to hear Kanye praise Trump when you can listen to Bill and Hillary Clinton tell anecdotes about their historic selves? Those looking for a cheaper alternative should consider walking barefoot across a roomful of Legos.

Is anyone tracking how often the punditocracy’s Conventional Wisdom is wrong? It’s gotta be a lot. Most recently, no, the Kavanaugh clown show didn’t erase the “enthusiasm gap” between the parties: A new CNN poll found it’s smaller but still significant.

He’s from DelCo. Probably drives a white van.

Again, Conventional Wisdom whiffed on Gritty, the Flyers mascot that has taken the country by storm. Some Philadelphians, especially the actual hockey fans, still dislike the disheveled, creepy creature, but he’s a social media favorite, especially after he was adopted as an ally by the city’s Antifa forces. This writer attempts to answer a simple but complex question: Why?

From the Every White Guy Deserves a Second Chance file: the cop who killed Tamir Rice has been hired as a cop again, by a small-town police chief who was apparently looking for a distraction from his own horrible record in the job.

Oh, yeah, I almost for the UN’s assessment of the planet’s current fever —Our grandchildren are fucked.

the administration is eliminating the position. It was basically a campaign promise. After they laughed him off the stage, it went into high gear.
      Cant change my mind.

Why doesn’t anyone up state work to lobby for protection of the inland bays with legislation?

    • Alby

Because it’s too easy to attack such people as outsiders telling the locals what’s best for them.

yeah, they tried that with me when I spoke the other week. Told them I have lived in the lnland bays drainage basin most of my life and my wife and kid are natives. There’s 2 new plastic beige rectangular new homes starting at 400K on the farm down the street from where they tore down a 200 year old farm house to build abominations for cheap skate retirees from other states to escape taxes

    Good one, Ben.

Don’t discount the possibility of him pulling a Blago and auctioning it off.

Let’s enlist Gritty to support suburban Philadelphia’s Todd Rundgren for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. I think they have similar hair. His nomination was one of 15 announced today. Winners (usually 5) revealed in December.

Not nominated, not in, should be: Jethro Tull, the Smiths, Los Lobos. Also Warren Zevon, King Crimson, New Order, Chic, Carole King, T. Rex, Spinners, Replacements. (All of this IMHO, of course).

Good nominations this year (besides Todd): Radiohead, Zombies, Kraftwerk, John Prine, Roxy Music, the Cure: (Yes, I’m an Anglophile.)

Meh: Def Leppard, Rufus and Chaka Kahn, Devo, LL Cool Jay, MC5, Rage Against the Machine (probably beloved on this blog), Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks (Mac already in). I like these just fine, but not Hall-worthy.

    • Carole King’s not in? Only made one of the best-selling albums of all-time and wrote or co-wrote at least 100 classic songs. Also agree on the ‘Placemats, they made the ’80’s almost tolerable. I take it that Husker Du isn’t nominated either.

The old turds who run the place have never heard of Hüsker Dü.

    MC5 long overdue.

  6. Is it me or did the Matt Bittle piece o Carper seem unusally phoned in?

    • Alby

All the news was in the last three paragraphs.

  7. RE Vanella

    Not you.

Rock and Roll HOF is a joke. Until Peter Tosh, John Mayall and Toots and the Maytals get in it may be ignored.

  8. nathan arizona

    I’d put those three in.

  9. RE Vanella

Nice! I mean Jimmy Cliff’s in and he should be. But let’s get Mr Hibbert in!

    Long live Toots!

Hillary Clinton: “I will reach out to Republicans … Your party, the party of Lincoln, is better than Donald Trump”

    https://mobile.twitter.com/CNN/status/776586758096027649

I’ll tell you what. If you want us to stop the Hillary bashing and “come together” and stop “relitigating 2016″…

Go get your fucking girl. For real. Cause this is some fucking trash.

And I heard her and Bill on going on an arena speaking tour… For money.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/hillary-bill-clinton-to-launch-speaking-tour-after-2018-midterms/2018/10/08/c73e4666-cb1a-11e8-a360-85875bac0b1f_story.html

Bill & Hillary look worse with every passing day. You want to defend this? You what to come together? Then get your fucking heads on straight and fight for the real candidates. You know what talking about.

    • Will they enter the arena to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Don’t Stop’?

I think that even their music was chosen by pollsters.

  11. BTW, those drug ads? Where the fuck were they during the primary? THAT was when they could have helped.

    • Alby

I sent them an email asking that last week. No response.
