US/Mexico Border Closed (in Spirit)

I don’t know why Trump bothered to back down on this. He could have just declared the border closed and his supporters (including the New York Times) would have played along.

President Donald Trump clearly reacted to the backlash to his border closing threat Thursday, saying that he’d give Mexico a year to stem the flow of immigrants and drugs into the United States before closing the border and levying tariffs on car imports.
