Delaware Forces Teachers to Supply Their Own Classrooms
Delaware teacher’s pay over $500 each year for the tools they need to do their job. Meanwhile property tax assessments haven’t been adjusted since 1974 in Sussex and 1980 in Kent and New Castle.
Not surprised, politicians love to learn bad habits from other states. As for property tax reassessment the rich will not allow it, and as ever the cowards we call the politicians will cower at the very thought of offending their owners. It’s a reminder that blue Delaware is frequently not a very blue state at all.
Take a look at this house in Rehoboth. $3,395,000.00
Annual taxes = $3199. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!

And for the record they should only raise property taxes in Rehoboth, not Bethany
Yup. I it based on the market value of that property in 1974. Fucking ridiculous.
Also – lol.
“Delaware teacher’s pay over $500 each year …..Meanwhile property tax assessments”
“Teachers in New York are digging into their own pockets to buy school supplies, spending an average of $480 over the school year”
“On average, a teacher in America spends $459 on school supplies.”
Correlation does not indicate causation. While no teacher should be forced to spend any of their income on supplies. It’s not property taxes that the cause. 91% of teachers say that classroom budgets are inadequate (http://grantmamas.com/995/infographic-teachers-spend-money/). Why? Even in states where property taxes (especially the school portion) are high (i.e. NY), it is the same problem. so they say.
Historically, the data shows that this is a common lament that for all money spent on education, too few dollars find their to way into the classroom. In state after state, the administration side of education is growing at a greater rate than the classroom side. I think that equation needs to be changed.

High property taxes don’t necessarily mean more money. In most states property taxes make up the bulk of the budget. In Delaware local districts contribute only 40% of the total, which is why the property taxes are low. We pay at the state level.
So to stop teachers from paying out of pocket (wont happen) the idea is that doubling their taxes will help?
I endorse your plan, Art. Doubling was more aggressive than I was thinking, but I like your moxie.
