Song of the Day 9/25: George Jones, “The King Is Gone (So Are You)”

Filed in National by on September 25, 2019

My biggest gripe about Ken Burn’s country music documentary so far: Not enough George Jones. Best country singer ever IMHO. Maybe tonight’s finale will treat his long decline. He sang a lot of songs lamenting the bottle, but none of the others offer the pathos of what this supposed novelty song. Ol’ George isn’t lamenting the death of the King — he cracked open a commemorative fifth of bourbon in an Elvis-shaped bottle and is drinking it from a Fred Flintstone jelly jar.

It is a great documentary. I don’t even like most country music.
