BREAKING: Gov. Carney Stonewalls Education Funding Lawsuit!

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on January 16, 2020

I am now officially a subscriber to the Delaware State News, and this story from Randall Chase is why I took the plunge.

Gov. John Carney has chosen to emulate Donald Trump and has made his top appointed officials unavailable for deposition in the lawsuit charging that state public schools are inadequately funded:

Attorneys for Gov. John Carney are trying to prevent Delaware’s education secretary and budget director from being deposed in a lawsuit alleging that the state is failing to provide adequate educational opportunities for disadvantaged students.

A judge was scheduled to hear arguments Thursday on the state’s request for a protective order preventing Education Secretary Susan Bunting and Management and Budget Director Michael Jackson from having to sit for depositions.

In what passes for comment from this tight-lipped administration, a spokesman called the deposition requests ‘highly irregular’, which has a kernel of truth to it inasmuch as there aren’t many lawsuits of this…ilk.

An attorney for the administration (The Paradee Bros’ sister, perhaps) claimed that the request for deposition was nothing more than a plan ‘to harass and annoy’.

Ah, yes, why should officials be subject to harassment and annoyance when all we’re talking about is systemic and deep-seated under-funding of public education? These depositions are taking serious time away from the Governor’s ‘disc golf’ exploits.

Did I mention he is putatively a Democrat?

  1. Annnd, just like that. From the Delaware State News:

“Attorneys for Gov. John Carney have dropped their opposition to Delaware’s education secretary and budget director being deposed in a lawsuit alleging the state is failing to provide adequate educational opportunities for disadvantaged students.

A spokesman for Carney confirmed Thursday that the state had dropped its opposition to the depositions. A revised scheduling order signed by the judge calls for all fact depositions to be completed by Feb. 28.”

If I were a corporate shill lawyer moonlighting as a blogger, I’d point out that I posted this article, and, as a result of this article, the Governor had no choice but to reverse course. I’m a self-proclaimed HERO!

But, my humility, always seen here in abundance, would prevent me from doing that.

  2. Paul says:

$36M taken from the education budget 2 years ago only because “there was no money”. No move to restore these funds. But asking the governor to explain is harassment.
