BREAKING!: House D Leaders Fire Long-Time Employee Who Supports Union

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on February 18, 2020

More than most, I’m not at all shocked by this.  I thought that Pete and Val would have covered their tracks better than this. But here is the tweet from the organizers:

Delaware General Assembly Union

@delawaregaunion

This morning, the leadership of@DEHouseDems fired a long-time employee who has signed a union card and attended organizing meetings. No reason was given for the firing. No communication has been made between leadership and staff regarding this firing.

The House leaders have been and continue to be total scum.

    Bring the inflatable rat.

    • Absolutely. The guy they fired was Hadey Salem (pronounced ‘Haddy’), a highly-regarded policy staffer.

This is so in keeping with the ‘lead through fear’ philosophy of Pete ‘n Val. Will any members of the caucus stand up to them? BTW, I met two extraordinary new candidates for that Caucus last night. I’ll be writing about them later today.

It would be a nice time for the leadership to hear from some other unions, but other then the DSEA, I’ve never seen a lot of solidarity in the Delaware organized labor world.

    • Bane says:

Dirty secret: Delaware Organized Labor (Building Trades and Construction) bankrolls the Delaware Democratic Party. For those reasons, you don’t have to “see” them. They kill bills (guns) and they get their bills passed (apprenticeship/workplace fraud) without a lot of noise. DSEA and AfSME (Public Employees Union) rarely get what they want which is why you always “see” them talking to legislators.

Also, Dems are more informed about public employees and education than they are about construction. Liberals….. Hahah

I am surprised. He will sue of course. It’s hard to see how Schwartzkopf gains by this.

    • Here’s the problem, and here’s why legislative workers need a union. They are ‘at-will’ employees, subject to the whims of their employers, the worst of whom is Valerie Longhurst. If she gets a bug up her not-insubstantial butt, you’re gone.

Maybe, hopefully, a lawsuit just might be possible due to the specter of his firing being directly related to his union support. I’d LOVE to see it.

I think about this lack of union solidarity almost everyday.

  5. mediawatch says:

The rationale is probably something like this:
By trying to organize, you’re giving our constituents the impression that we don’t care one iota for the working people of this state. How dare you? Nothing could be farther from the truth. You’re fired!

  6. AQC says:

Hadey is such a good guy. This sucks, but frankly, he could do better than working down there anyway.

    FYI https://twitter.com/MatthewCBittle/status/1230113213523677184

(of course they’d say that regardless of whether it was related or not lol, just thought it was worth noting)

  8. jason330 says:

“(Pete and Val) strongly dispute the firing had anything to do with the union effort.”

    LOL. “strongly dispute”.

My Lands! Why ever would someone even think that?!?! Be a Dear, and get me a cold compress, I feel lightheaded.

    • Right. A respected employee who just happened to sign a union card gets fired with no notice. Not a scintilla of relationship between the two whatsoever.

      Val is lying again.

Here’s the kicker: The reason why staff felt they had to organize is/was largely due to the heavy hand of Valerie Longhurst.
