South Carolina Debate Preview & Bloomberg’s plan to win on the second ballot of a brokered convention

Filed in National by on February 25, 2020

Bernie Sanders will be the target.

There is widespread panic among the Democratic and media establishment that a “SOCIALIST!” might run the table from here on out.

Pete Buttigieg is going to say that Bernie is “polarizing” and that he loves Castro. Yawn. I once respected Buttigieg. His unraveling has been pitiful.

Joe Biden may bring up the fact that Sanders contemplated a primary run against Obama. *gasp!* (“Psst…Obama was African American.” I wonder if Biden will be able to land that innuendo. He has lost more than a step in the innuendo landing department.)

Mike Bloomberg has been assailing Sanders’ record on gun control. He keep that going, but whatever. This is a dumb little sideshow for Blooms. (see below)

I hope Elizabeth Warren is smart enough to not succumb to attack Bernie conventional wisdom. After all that conventional wisdom is based on stupid old-timey political thinking. According to the millionaire TV pundit class Bernie’s “momentum” can be disrupted and primary voters in later states will re-think there support for Sanders.

That’s just dumb political consulting. Bernies support in later states is baked in. Nobody is going to say, “Wow, the corporate media takedown of Sanders at that debate has turned me into a Biden voter.” And yet, political consultants are making a lot of money with this kind of crap.

That simply will not happen. Let me know if I got any of this right. I will not be watching.

Bonus – anybody read about this Bloomberg plan to win on the second ballot at a brokered convention.

LAS VEGAS — Mike Bloomberg is privately lobbying Democratic Party officials and donors allied with his moderate opponents to flip their allegiance to him — and block Bernie Sanders — in the event of a brokered national convention.

The effort, largely executed by Bloomberg’s senior state-level advisers in recent weeks, attempts to prime Bloomberg for a second-ballot contest at the Democratic National Convention in July by poaching supporters of Joe Biden and other moderate Democrats, according to two Democratic strategists familiar with the talks and unaffiliated with Bloomberg.

A lot of my support of and respect for Warren hinges on her not falling in the trap. By all means, differentiate yourself from Sanders. This is still a competition (this aint RuPaul Best Friend Race…. i hope someone gets that)… But DONT help the oligarch class. Pete and Joe are clearly in the bag for Bloomberg… who is all but an open ally of Trump. All those billboards and cute memes make him about as an effective “foe” as Avanetti or George Conway. If Warren joins the Bloomy Brigade, im full on Bernie Bro.

  2. Brian says:

Can anybody explain why someone who is trying to convince people he’s not a communist would extol the virtues of Castro?

    • jason330 says:

Did I miss something? Who is trying to convince people he’s not a communist ?

      • bamboozer says:

It’s a reference to Bernie praising Cuba’s educational system, apparently it’s pretty good. Here Brian attempts to conflate Communism and Socialism, an old conservative favorite, and just as false as ever.

    • Alby says:

Maybe he thinks people are smart enough to realize that not all the changes communism brought to Cuba were for the worse. Which is all he said.

    • John Kowalko says:

Respectfully, you have to be an idiot to think that Sanders acknowledgement of a really good educational program implemented by Fidel Castro to raise literacy in that country and Cuba’s willingness to send doctors and other medical personnel throughout the hemisphere to countries in need somehow signals his communist tendencies to embrace authoritarian regimes.
Try this fact on and absorb a little reality check all of you history revisionists that think Fulgencio Batista, the murderous dictator who confiscated land from the poor Cubans and distributed it to his rich friends and mob-connected American interests was the second coming of Christ. Yes, Batista was overthrown by the Cuban revolution led by Castro and good riddance to that human garbage (Batista).
Cuba and Castro has been more of an ally to vulnerable people throughout the Western Hemisphere than some of our own patriotic leaders
HAVANA — Dr. Luis Sauchay is the kind of hands-on physician you want in an emergency.
Though relatively young at 34, Sauchay has chalked up more than a decade of practicing hardship medicine.
Right out of medical school, he spent two years on the high seas, the only doctor for hundreds of fishermen aboard an industrial vessel.
During two other years, he cared for the sick and forgotten in an understaffed African clinic, treating countless cases of tuberculosis and cholera.
For the last five years, he has been the local family doctor for 200 working-class families in Havana’s Párraga neighborhood.
And after last December’s tsunami, Sauchay joined a Cuban medical brigade to comfort the shell-shocked in Sri Lanka.
So it was no surprise when just a day after Katrina decimated the Gulf Goast that Sauchay volunteered to help victims even though it means leaving his wife alone with their 2-month-old son.
“I can do a lot of good there,” he stressed, “because I have years of experience dealing with this type of catastrophe.”
Sauchay, though, may never get the chance to prove his worth. Despite Bush administration assurances that international aid offers will be kept free of politics, Cold War tensions seem to be freezing out help from Cuba.
      Thanks, but no thanks
In separate Washington press briefings, both the White House and State Department spokesmen this week downplayed the Cuban government’s offer to send some 1,600 medics, field hospitals and 83 tons of medical supplies to ease the humanitarian disaster.
In December 1980, members of the National Guard of El Salvador abducted, sexually assaulted and executed four American churchwomen.
The churchwomen were working in rural areas with peasants who lived in fear of being kidnapped and killed by soldiers and right-wing death squads. In the eyes of the Salvadoran military, working with the poor was synonymous with being a subversive, and “marked them for assassination,”
At times, the incoming Reagan administration seemed to blame the victims.
“The nuns were not just nuns,” said Jeanne Kirkpatrick, one of Reagan’s top foreign policy advisors and his first ambassador to the United Nations, “They were political activists.”
The much-beloved Roman Catholic Archbishop of El Salvador, Oscar Arnulfo Romero pleaded with the Salvadoran military that same month: “In the name of God, in the name of this suffering people whose cries rise to heaven more loudly each day, I implore you, I beg you, I order you in the name of God: stop the repression.”
The next day, while the archbishop was saying a private mass for the mother of the owner of an independent newspaper whose offices had been bombed, a single shot rang out. The bullet entered the left side of his chest, hit his heart and settled in his lung. It was the work of a right-wing death squad.
Over the course of time, it became clear that the Reagan administration, and to some extent later the George H. W. Bush administrations, had turned a blind eye to a broad array of human rights abuses committed by the Salvadoran military during the 1980s in order to keep billions of dollars in aid flowing to El Salvador’s civilian-military junta, and it’s rightist backers, as they fought the leftist uprising.

I hate 100% literacy and an infant mortality rate better than the US now.
