Friedman Agrees w/ Me: Biden shouldn’t “debate” Trump unless two conditions are met

Filed in National by on July 12, 2020

(Biden should debate Trump) only under two conditions. Otherwise, he’s giving Trump unfair advantages.

First, Biden should declare that he will take part in a debate only if Trump releases his tax returns for 2016 through 2018. Biden has already done so, and they are on his website. Trump must, too. No more gifting Trump something he can attack while hiding his own questionable finances.

And second, Biden should insist that a real-time fact-checking team approved by both candidates be hired by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates — and that 10 minutes before the scheduled conclusion of the debate this team report on any misleading statements, phony numbers or outright lies either candidate had uttered. That way no one in that massive television audience can go away easily misled.

He should not go into such a high-stakes moment ceding any advantages to Trump.

Of course the Democrats don’t want Biden to debate Trump, and everyone knows why. It’s the same reason they kept Mueller on the down low. I posted a comment on DL about Mueller’s condition on July 22, 2019, and at the time ,that comment was literally the only thing written on the internet about Mueller’s mental acuity. How can that be?

I think the Democrats and Biden camp should be very careful about how they go about this plan of running Biden as a vehicle for the person they really want in office lest the Republicans call them out for election fraud….You’re welcome.

    • Seriously? We see the limits of Trump’s mental acuity every day.

I think Biden should debate Trump. Even Biden in his dotage can underscore both the absolute corruption of this Administration and Trump’s complete abdication of responsibility to protect the American people. People recognize and understand that Biden’s not as glib as he used to be. But Trump has no case for reelection, and Biden is more than capable of enumerating that fact. Plus, Trump’s at least as much of a verbal stumblebum as Biden.

Doing or nor doing something because conservatives might have “x” reaction is about the stupidest strategy any Democrat can have.

Shockingly, many still follow that strategy. I just pray Biden isn’t in that club of dummies.

The tradition of presidential debates needs to die. It involves a skill that has literally no bearing on the ability to do the job.

It’s more political theater, meaning entertainment. And one of the biggest problems with our politics is that people treat it as entertainment. Anything that ends that is good, therefore killing this tradition would be good.

The tradition of seeing presidential tax returns is far more important, as we’ve seen for the past four years.

    • RSE says:

I disagree. It should be important to see what the candidate is like in the moment, and not just the well handled, scripted canned version of the candidate.

      • Alby says:

Fail. There are lots of ways to see “what the candidate is like in the moment” that don’t involve the artificial conditions of a debate.

You really need to see Trump on stage again? If you don’t know who Trump is, how corrupt he is and how unequipped he is to be President by now – you’re a fucking idiot.

“In the moment”, in any moment, Trump, that horrid subspecies of a human that you choose to blindly worship has proven to be exactly what he is. A mentally challenged, hate-feeding racist slime who glories in trading innocent human lives of Americans to satiate the appetite for resentment and hate that his abnormally stupid acolytes feed off of. People like you and the ignorant haters on Fox and the festering sores of inhumanity that occupy the Republican party allow and encourage this scourge on humanity that is soiling the Whitehouse. Show some respect for yourself at least and shut up. Your arguments and statements are specious and your attempts at logical discourse are bereft of any logic. If you feel some sort of ideological obligation to defend any part of Trump’s rabid personality and mannerisms than you are beyond any salvation for your own soul.

I don’t think I’ve ever conveyed in any way that I “blindly” or otherwise, worship Trump. Trust me when I say that there is no worshiping going on here, Representative Kowalko.
