Obama calls for end of ‘Jim Crow relic’ filibuster – While Coons vows to join with GOP Buddies to preserve the filibuster

Filed in National by on July 31, 2020

Obama yesterday:

Former President Barack Obama on Thursday called for the elimination of the Senate’s filibuster rule if it is used to block sweeping voting reforms, labeling the chamber’s long-held 60-vote threshold a “Jim Crow relic.”

Delivering a eulogy at the funeral of Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Obama implored politicians to go beyond paying lip service to the civil rights icon and urged leaders to continue Lewis’ life‘s work by pushing for reforms. The best way to honor Lewis, the former president said, would be to pass the recently introduced voting rights act named in his honor.

Meanwhile, Coons joins with white supremacists buddies in the GOP and vows to keep the filibuster:

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Chris Coons (D-DE) led a bipartisan group of 61 Senators in writing to Senate leadership, urging them to preserve the 60 vote threshold for legislation.
“This letter demonstrates that a majority of the Senate, both Republicans and Democrats, can come together to protect an important tradition of the Senate that recognizes the rights of the minority and makes bipartisan legislation more likely,” said Senator Collins. “After the contentious and polarized debate of the past few weeks, I am hopeful that this letter indicates a new determination by a bipartisan group of more than 60 Senators to move forward to solve the pressing problems facing our nation.”

“Democrats want the Senate to work, and we are willing to partner with our colleagues across the aisle if we can get things done for the American people,” said Senator Coons. “We have a long way to go to heal the wounds between our two parties, but this letter is a small first step towards that important goal.”

Coons is awful. It is amazing how wrong he has been on so many issues during his relatively short tenure in the Senate.

Frankly, at his core, he is an elitist. He can’t get out from under his feeling that elites should rule.

    • Alby says:

Frankly, at his core, he is a Republican — a defunct sort of Republican, but a Republican nonetheless.

So, BTW, was Hillary Clinton. Like Coons, she started out as a Young Republican, and left the party only because of its stances on social justice towards minorities and women. Neither one has ever stood up against rapacious capitalism, because it remains among their core values.

The days when politicians can pretend to be “progressive” because they’re willing to make women and minorities first-class citizens are over. The Democratic Party reeks of former Republicans or should-be Republicans like Pete Schwartzkopf. Which is why I consider even people who are trying to reform it from within deluded fools.

The Democratic Party is headed for collapse because of internal contradictions just like the Republican Party is. I believe both will collapse within the next 10 years, though what then emerges might retain the names.

any thoughts about what the party structure might look like after those 10 years? four parties covering left and right “extremes” and “centrists” just off of left and right? if still just two, what do you think they would look like? or something else. this kind of speculation probably drives you crazy, and please ignore if you want to. but it fascinates me so I’ll venture it.

    • Alby says:

According to game theory, our system will inevitably produce two parties. So there’s that.

I could give you a long, rambling answer, but it boils down to I can’t predict with any degree of confidence who will ally with whom to create the new alignment.

Capitalism is in crisis. It has proved incapable of dealing with the global ecological disaster in progress, despite 50 years of warnings. So as long as people keep electing the Coons Democrat/Lincoln Project Republican consensus, the problems will continue unsolved and people will get angrier and more volatile.

The current project must be not simply to defeat Trump, but to sow salt in the fields of “conservatism,” which is just selfishness raised to the level of religion. It is no longer just an impediment to human progress. It is now a threat to human survival.
