Song of the Day 8/7: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “The Waiting”

Anything can happen, 2016, blah blah blah…what bullshit. At least 52% of the voting populace impatiently awaits the chance to vote against Trump. And the waiting is the hardest part.

The song was the first single from Petty’s 1981 LP “Hard Promises.” It reached only No. 19 on the Hot 100, but hit No. 1 on the then-new Rock Tracks chart, which measured airplay on rock radio stations.

“That was a song that took a long time to write,” Petty said. “Roger McGuinn swears he told me the line, about the waiting being the hardest part, but I think I got the idea from something Janis Joplin said on television. I had the chorus very quickly, but I had a very difficult time piecing together the rest of the song. It’s about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true. I’ve always felt it was an optimistic song.”
