While this is the first time that a Kennedy has lost a primary race in Massachusetts, it’s not the first time a Kennedy has lost a primary precisely because he couldn’t explain why he was running in the first place. Ted Kennedy’s primary challenge of Jimmy Carter in 1980 damaged Carter’s reelection chances, and Kennedy couldn’t answer Roger Mudd’s question on national TV: ‘Why are you running for President?’ There are few things worse in politics than family dynasties. I can only hope that this marks the end of the so-called Kennedy dynasty. I suspect I’m wrong. BTW, what was Nancy Pelosi thinking in endorsing the challenger here?
