Song of the Day 1/15: Steely Dan, “With a Gun”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on January 15, 2021

How do wingnut Congresswomen go to Congress? That’s right, with a gun.

This isn’t one of the Dan’s more celebrated tunes; it was hidden in the middle of side 2 of “Pretzel Logic” and is generally regarded, even among fans, as Becker and Fagan doing a parody of the Byrds but not really pulling it off. That’s OK, though, because the same is true of the Q-Anon Cuties, who are parodies of outlaws but can’t really pull it off.

Maybe Dan’s “Don’t Take Me Alive”
    would work for Trump.

  2. Side 2 of Pretzel Logic is…interesting. Needless to say, I’ve listened to this album a lot. Second only to Countdown To Ecstasy, which is MY fave Dan album.

But, on Side 2, you’ve got Parker’s Band and the title cut, and four pretty darned idiosyncratic cuts, including the trio that conclude the album: With A Gun/Charlie Freak/Monkey In Your Soul. Always seemed like a strange way to close out an album to me.

I assumed they were a little short of material, because Charlie Freak and Parker’s Band both date back to Android Warehouse days. So does Barrytown.
