As a pro-family Republican Senator, I’m vehemently opposed to the Democrats’ plan to reform the Child Tax Credit and give families money every month to care for their children. Sure, on the surface it sounds good when they say things like, “This plan would cut the child poverty rate in half” and “Children deserve to eat.” But ask yourself, what is really going on here? Another month, another experience with abhorrent and disappointing behavior from my RD committee.This time, Dustyn Thompson asked the two candidates running for Chair what they planned to do to bring in new members and be more involved in the community. Our Chair, Frank Stevens, found it appropriate to launch into an unhinged tirade about “progressives” which included berating us with profanities and stating that we were tearing the party apart by supporting insurgent progressive candidates in other districts. He never answered the question.This behavior is abusive and should not be tolerated by the Democratic Party. We cannot build our party when those who hold leadership positions do not act as leaders, but as petulant, entitled children that lash out at fellow committee members who dare to question them. We also cannot build our party when the diversity of the district is not represented in leadership or the committee by design.
This is why progressives will continue to challenge the power structure of the Party. We deserve a hell of a lot better.
