Song of the Day 5/30: B.J. Thomas, “[Hey Won’t You Play] Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on May 30, 2021

Pop, county and gospel singer Billy Joe Thomas died yesterday at age 78, three months after being diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Though he’s most famous for his pop hits “Hooked on a Feeling” (No. 5, 1968) and “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” (No. 1, 1969), Thomas started out as a country singer and, after getting sober and finding Jesus in 1976, spent the rest of his career singing mostly gospel music.

He had his second No. 1 record — and his first to top the country chart — with this 1975 tune, his first Top 40 hit in three years. It has the longest title of any No. 1 song in history.

It wasn’t his last hit, though — he re-appeared in 1989 with “As Long As We Got Each Other,” the theme song to the TV show “Growing Pains,” in a duet with Dusty Springfield that reached No. 7.

BJ Thomas also sang a haunting rendition of the old song by Hank Williams “I’m so lonely I could cry” with lyrics that express a feeling almost all of us have experienced. Many, over the last pandemic year, had issues of loneliness and social isolation. No one sings this song any better!
