Pop, county and gospel singer Billy Joe Thomas died yesterday at age 78, three months after being diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Though he’s most famous for his pop hits “Hooked on a Feeling” (No. 5, 1968) and “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” (No. 1, 1969), Thomas started out as a country singer and, after getting sober and finding Jesus in 1976, spent the rest of his career singing mostly gospel music.
He had his second No. 1 record — and his first to top the country chart — with this 1975 tune, his first Top 40 hit in three years. It has the longest title of any No. 1 song in history.
It wasn’t his last hit, though — he re-appeared in 1989 with “As Long As We Got Each Other,” the theme song to the TV show “Growing Pains,” in a duet with Dusty Springfield that reached No. 7.
