Plus, my Fave Video Of The Year. And, a Spotify list of all the tunes.

But, first, a recap for all of you who prefer to have everything in a single post:

El Somnambulo’s Fave Tunes Of 2021: #’s 50-41

‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes Of 2021: #’s 40-31

‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes Of 2021: #’s 30-21

‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes Of 2021: #’s 20-11

This video blew me away, and is my Fave Of The Year.  Stay ’til the very end, you won’t regret it:

And, now, The Top Ten.  Not notable merely for the killer songs in it, but for the absence of any white male rockers in the mix.  Not the way I planned it, but I certainly don’t apologize for it:

10. ” Recognise your mistakes and I’ll let you back in.”

9. “How long do you have to live in a place Before you can call it “home?”

8.  Prepare to be en-tranced.

7. “Is it insensitive for me to say ‘Get your shit together’ so I can love you?”

6.  ” I look too good–to be alone”.

5. “Lighting one up like I used to, Dancing all alone like I used to, Giving it up like I used to, Falling in love I like I used to.”

4A/4B.  My wife made a strong case that these should collectively be #1.  But the videos are such a key element that I just couldn’t do it.  Meaning, watch the vids back-to-back. If you don’t laugh, you’re on the wrong blog, and I don’t want to know you:

You, uh, might not want to touch the sista’s dreads…

3.  “My body’s bound, but my soul will fly.”

2.

1. I occasionally imagined another song here in its place.  But I found that this is where it belongs.

“She said, “Oh, dear, I can see you’ve had a rough few months
But this year, it’s gonna be a good one
I’ll count to three and tap your shoulder
We’re gonna put your heart back together
So all those little pieces they took from you
They’re coming back now.”

My favorites of your Top 10 are the songs by Anthony Joseph, Bruno Mars//Anderson .Paak (“Leave This Door Open” is probably my second favorite over-all) and Yasmin Williams. Have to say I wasn’t crazy about your top choice (it’s not you, it’s me).

My favorite song on your entire list is your No. 12, “Call Me a Fool” by Valerie June (and Carla Thomas!). I guess my second choice from10-20 would be the one by Amiee Mann.

  2. I think my youngest daughter would have placed ‘Call Me A Fool’ higher.

She started lobbying for it as soon as it came out.

As to my top choice, you’re not alone. The people who love it reallyreally love it. Others told me they just don’t ‘get it’. I found it to be a calming response to the ‘hard drive’ that has been these last two years.

By the way, what the heck is Valerie June wearing on the album cover? She looks great in the video, but that cover doesn’t flatter her.

  4. ‘Hard Drive’, like much of Cassandra Jenkins’ 2021 album, was written after, and in large part in response to, the death of David Berman, who Jenkins was scheduled to tour with before his suicide.

To me, it’s a song of both encouragement and healing. Here’s some more about the song:

Marz is the rightful heir to the soul thrown vacated by R Kelly. That song is fire.

    • That was my oldest daughter’s fave. And, it’s the catchiest song on the list. It just wasn’t ‘2021’ enough for me to put it at the very top. But, I always look forward to hearing it. Not to mention, you can tell they’re having the time of their lives in that video.
