Chris Coons Joins With Republicans Calling Biden’s Ukraine Policy “Weak”

Filed in National by on February 22, 2022

This is not satire. Senator Chris Coons marched in lockstep with his GOP allies piling on Joe Biden’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine according to reports now running on NPR and in  VanityFair :

Though Russian forces have apparently crossed the Ukrainian border, both the White House and Zelensky at first appeared wary of formally declaring it an “invasion,” a distinction that would trigger the severe — and, for much of Europe, economically costly — sanctions that Biden has threatened. That led to attacks from Republicans, who have painted Biden as weak on Russia, and to calls from even some Democrats to immediately begin imposing “significant costs on President Putin and the Kremlin,” as Senator Chris Coons said Monday.

Uh oh! Siding with his “good friends” in the Republican party again is he? Not surprised, at this point Coons is Manchin Lite.

But some Republicans said these actions had come too late to be effective.

“Biden-Harris officials are to an enormous extent directly responsible for this crisis. He and his administration instead settled for an endlessly deferred and wholly uncredible strategy of responding to Putin’s aggression after an invasion. They have pursued bizarre tactics like declassifying American intelligence and trying to shame Putin. That approach has failed,” Republican Senator Ted Cruz said Monday.

    Coons:

“The time for taking action to impose significant costs on President Putin and the Kremlin starts now,” Senator Chris Coons, a top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement Monday

Notice not a damned one of them shares any specific idea about what Joe should actually do.

Should he ready the nukes? Send a swarm of B-52s on a “training exercise” over Europe? Move the Mediterranean Fleet into the Black Sea and the 2nd Armored Division to Moldova? Forbid all Russian commercial flights from entering US airspace?

You can only laugh. Congress has ceded any role in foreign affairs, save carping criticism.

    Good point, Hop-Frog.

And I too have ceded any role in foreign affairs.
