Voters Smack Down Schwartzkopf/McGuiness

Filed in National by on September 13, 2022

Lydia York defeated the convicted state auditor by a roughly 2 to 1 margin.  In addition to being a referendum on not having convicted criminals hold public office, this vote is widely seen as a repudiation of Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf who was a tenacious supporter of the convicted auditor.

Many believe that Schwartzkopf will be forced out of the leadership by his party caucus in a few weeks time.

  1. Will he even slink back to Dover? This was an ass-whoopin’.

  2. Lydia leads KMG in Sussex County: 4760-1628.

  3. North Shores FTW says:

Pete may be ousted but I doubt the average voter was casting their ballot today as a big FU to Pete. McGuiness was convicted of a crime. I think it’s more of a repudiation of her serving another term.

  4. Kevin Ohlandt says:

Does Carney have the stones to remove her from office after her sentencing? Will the sentencing take place any time soon or after her term is over? Will the House have enough to oust Pete? Will McGuiness use a scorched earth policy during her final months in office? Which district does Biden live in and who did he vote for today? What excuses will McG come up with for losing? Will McG’s family start growing up and stop championing her as the second coming of Christ on her Facebook page?

Considering the MAGA Rethugs continue to destroy my faith in humanity… I would like to thank all voting Democrats in Delaware for this moment.

I have a picture of Pete posing today with Madinah’s Opponent, just another ‘nonpolitical pic” 🙂

  8. Anon says:

Kathy lost Pete’s district/her home district 79 to 21%. She underperformed her already terrible statewide performance in *their* district.

With hindsight the invisible York campaign turned out to be the best strategy. Confrontational contrast mailings would have only motivated more low-information voters to go to the polls, relying on superficial information like name recognition and KMG’s whitebread photo.

In the big picture, progressive activists (I think) deliberately kept the York campaign low-key, while working downballot races to get progressive voters to the polls. With low-info voters off the table, the progressive part of the party machine did its job.

Although with even more hindsight any strategy would have worked, given the landslide results. But we didn’t know that at the time.

    • Alby says:

So you think the non-existent York mailers would have produced more McGuiness votes than the existent McGuiness mailers themselves did? Interesting theory.

      • The massive messaging campaign during the last week turned the tide bigly.

In hindsight, the York campaign could/should have sent out a compare/contrast piece (Honest vs convict) instead of hiring out-of-state know-nothings.

It worked out. But might not have.

        • Alby says:

I agree. I’m glad the low turnout kept the low-information voters home, but why save the money? It’s not like she’ll need it for the general. A Democratic ham sandwich would win the general.

    • The MoMo says:

…. but then that means she knowingly overpaid consultants for a do-nothing strategy. I’d prefer not to think that our incoming financial watchdog would do something like that.

      • Jason330 says:

        Pfft…

      • The PARTY did that. Lydia York was a first-time candidate. All this talk about ‘Lydia should have known…’ is misinformed and uninformed. You know what she knows? How to do the job of Auditor.

And she won with about 70% of the vote.

        • Interesting says:

          Agreed.

In other news….Now we need to make sure that we remind “our pal val” the she also is an unethical fraud. She needs to know that her future is limited. She would be a joke as the Speaker.

        • No Interest says:

          Agreed.

In other News…. We now need to remind “our pal val” that she too is an unethical waste of a seat. I am sure she thinks she can pounce on Speaker Pete…..

She will be a joke of a Speaker

Flooding the zone with t-shirts, FB posts, online ads, and signs along with being an incumbent supported by the Speaker of the House made the McGuiness campaign seem much more robust than it was.

If you looked at the pictures of her “meeting” voters closely, there were not many actual voters interested in being photographed with her. It is nice to know that she certainly felt it all slipping away.

This shows that politics isn’t all bad. Good people still win.

    • Nancy Willing says:

Was turnout driven by the AoA race more than lower tickets?

I feel pretty darn tootin’ happy with the results. Only three of the candidates lost from the twelve I’d supported (modestly) financially.

And fifteen out of eighteen of my ‘endorsed candidates’ won:
