Breaking – Pete Remains Speaker

Filed in National by on November 12, 2022

Someone dropped the ball. But who?

Val lost her nerve or never really had the pieces in place. I guess we’ll learn about the rube goldberg machinations at some point.

Here is the thing though. They are politicians, so we’ll never probably know the real story. Politicians are not driven by the same sorts of things that drive normal people. They are motivated by ancient grievances, arcane grudges, weird phobias, gossamer dreams of greatness, and the voices of their ancestors.

Anyway, our state house is still in the hands of unaccountable old cops.

I heard the Longhurst rumor so long ago that I wonder if the rookie progressives got seriously played by Pete and Val.

  3. Well, that’s officially the worst prediction I ever made.

  4. Alby says:

Quick, someone remind me why I shouldn’t say Delaware Democrats suck.

  5. Stormy says:

I heard from someone that works there and was there that Sean Matthews gave a 2 hour speach that tries to deal with problems in that chamber but failed

  6. Joe Connor says:

Baumbach collapsed like a cheap lawn Chair on a windy day in Dewey!
Matthews IS the problem he needs a primary!

  7. Alby says:

I bet KMG gives him a handjob in celebration.

  8. puck says:

So why exactly did we think Pete wouldn’t be Speaker again, other than our own distaste for his support of KMG, which doesn’t seem to be widely shared?

I didn’t have any prediction of my own. I don’t follow the House seat count as closely as some of you, especially downstate. Maybe I should take the time to build a before and after chart of the House election, unless I can find a handy explainer.

    • jason330 says:

Larry Lambert, Eric Morrison, Madinah Wilson-Anton, Keri Harris, all replaced such rotten losers that I guess it felt obvious that the center of political gravity had shifted.

Especially when Pete actively campaigned against incumbent members of the caucus.

  9. Alby says:

I might be alone in this, but I never saw Longhurst as an improvement over Blackhead anyway.

    • jason330 says:

Agree. Some people talked themselves into thinking that she would be better, but I didn’t see it,

    • True. But it would have been one less of them in leadership. They remain the Toxic Twosome.

      • Alby says:

I take your point, but I don’t think it would have changed any policies. It’s not as if she would have cut Petey for dead. Remember, the state cops are the keepers of the secrets. We have no idea what Pete knows that we don’t.

          Updated and Revised:

They are motivated by ancient grievances, arcane grudges, weird phobias, gossamer dreams of greatness, the voices of their ancestors, and the paralyzing fear of their secrets being revealed.

  10. bamboozer says:

Aieeee! The politically stupid…. It Burns. And stinks etc. etc. etc. (for that The King And I effect). So close, yet so far as the Kop Kabal lives to suck another day.

  11. jason330 says:

For newbies – The power of committee assignments and the power to kill legislation by sending it to die in committee makes the speaker as powerful, if not more powerful, than the Governor.

I have to say I am still shocked by this outcome.

    • The MoMo says:

Interestingly, I had heard that the line being peddled to Longhurst was that she wouldn’t be able to run as many of her own bills and so it wouldn’t be worth the tradeoff. Hard to say if that ultimately factored in, or if there was more of a 2018 Tim Ryan v. Pelosi style “oh it will definitely be my last term as speaker” deal.

      • Possible. Although most of ‘her own’ bills were stolen by her from those who ordinarily would have run them. As Speaker, there would have been plenty of glory to go around.
