First, a revisit to the rest of the Top 50.  To be followed by a Spotify list including the Top 50, plus songs that were Top 50-worthy:

And, now, The Top 10!:

10.  The songs on this album are essentially short stories in song form–Carveresque stories at that.  This was my fave:

4. Although Allison Russell had previously released this song on the 2019 Our Native Daughters (one of whom, Leyla McCalla, appeared at the Gild Hall) album, this duet with Brandi Carlile was released this year, and is transcendent:

2.  My fave song from my second fave album of the year:

1. My fave song from my fave album of the year is also my fave song of the year. Don’t think there’s anything Bartees Strange can’t do:

Nice list(s). Four of your Top 10 would be on my own list of favorites. In fact, here is that list, because apparently I still can’t stop making lists.

The songs I liked best came from these artists – Boys of Perpetual Nervousness (if only for their name). Martin Courtney. Delines. Drugdealer. Fontaines DC (especially the accents). Goose. Brian Jackson. Jaywood. Steve Lacy. Ben McElroy (new acoustic). Neighbor Lady. Adam Norsworthy. The Reds, Pinks & Purples. Sault. Bartees Strange. Str4ta. Thee Sacred Souls. Turnover. Alex Walker (country guy). Young Guv.

I always look forward to your list, always enjoy reading it and always learn something.

I’ve heard of two artists in this entire top 50. Kind of overwhelming to read about stuff I just have absolutely no knowledge of.

    • If you look at a lot of ‘best-of-‘ lists, there’s loads of artists I’ve never heard of. If I wasn’t still looking to bring artists into the Gild Hall, I’d be right there with you.

El Som – Alex Walker is actually Alex Williams. The name of the first band on my list is The Boys With the Perpetual Nervousness. But probably close enough! I hadn’t heard Shamarr Allen but I’m enjoying it. Should rock the Gild Hall!

    Andrew C. – Which two?

    • Actually had Alex Williams’ “Old Before My Time” on a longer list. My wife thought it belonged on the Top 50. It crossed the line from ‘country’ to ‘too country for me’, although I liked the voice of someone his age sounding like he started smoking and drinking whiskey when he was two years old:

Drive-By Truckers and Black Thought. The latter only because he is of course part of the legendary Roots and also has guested on many many songs from eclectic groups, the former only because it’s a silly name but I have no idea what they sound like.

El Som – I like the Alex Williams song you just posted. I like this one even better. I think it rocks more. Killer guitar.

Andrew C – Two good ones, imo.
