Decks have been swept clean.  Let’s hear some new musical treasures for the New Year.  Presented, as always, in alpha order based on artists’ names:

I LOVE this group. My wife, youngest daughter and I saw them in their almost-native habitat of Portland, OR.:

Havin’ a tough time choosing Nathan Arizona’s fave for this month. Opted for this cheeky country rocker:

The group from near Portland shows “video unavailable,” at least in the Schengen Area.

Great playlist. Set a personal record by having heard two of these songs before they appeared here. Didn’t know Nickel Creek was working together again, glad to hear that one.

  2. The Joseph video works here.

I generally go thru the entire list before posting to try to avoid that ‘video unavailable’ issue. At least you can catch it on the Spotify list.

International licensing is sometimes an issue, but this one’s weird. I can see the video if I search it by name, so I don’t know why it’s unavailable when embedded. The mysteries of the interwebs.

Joseph will be in Philly for Live at the World Cafe on June 23.

The National, the Hold Steady, Yo La Tengo — old friends bringing good songs with them (not always true of that last band). I do like the shit-kicker country of Elle King. I’m a country music fan (sometimes). I even listen to mainstream radio country now and then. Hope that doesn’t disqualify me from further music commentary. Tianna Esperanza came like a bolt out of the blue and really appeals to me. I like Circa Waves but don’t think this is their best song. There’s almost nothing I don’t like on this list, but I do find boygenius kind of boring and I think the hit-or-miss New Pornographers miss on this one.

For some reason I often think I’m going to like a New Pornographers song more than it turns out I do. Listened again and it did sound better to me. I don’t think the ice skating did them any favors.
